Valve Stem Seals, Removing And Installing

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Spark Plug Removal Tool3122B
• Valve Seal Removal Tool3364
• Valve Stem Seal Driver3365
• Valve Cotter Tool KitVAS5161 with Pressure ForkVAS 5161/2
• Valve Cotter Tool Kit - AdapterT40012

Procedure

Proceed as follows:

• Engine removed.

-- Remove the camshafts, refer to CAMSHAFTS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Mark the allocation of the roller rocker lever and the hydraulic adjusting elements so they can be installed again.

-- If necessary, remove the roller rocker levers with the hydraulic adjusting elements and place them on a clean surface.

-- Remove the ignition coils, refer to IGNITION COILS .

-- Remove spark plugs with Spark Plug Removal Tool3122B.

-- Move piston for that cylinder to "bottom dead center position".

-- Position Valve Cotter Tool Kit - PunchVAS5161/3 on valve spring plate.

-- Loosen stuck valve retainers with a plastic mallet.

-- Mount the Guide PlateVAS 5161/26 on the cylinder head.

-- Tighten guide plate with nuts -1 and 2- on cylinder head.

-- Install the Valve Cotter Tool Kit - AdapterT40012 with sealing ring in the spark plug thread and tighten by hand.

-- Connect hose to compressed air.

• Minimum pressure: 6 bar

Outer Valve Row:

-- Install Engaging Device VAS 5161/6 with installation fork VAS 5161/5 in guide plate as shown in illustration.

-- Slide Valve Cotter Tool Kit - Assembly CartridgeVAS5161/8 in guide plate.

-- Engage Pressure ForkVAS 5161/2 on engaging device and press installation cartridge down.

-- At the same time, rotate installation cartridge knurled screw right until points engage in valve retainers.

-- Move knurled screw back and forth slightly.

• Valve keeper are pressed against each other and capture in the installation cartridge.

-- Release the pressure fork.

-- Remove installation cartridge.

-- Unfasten guide plate and turn it aside.

• Pressurized air hose remains connected.

-- Remove the valve spring and the valve spring plate.

Inner Valve Row:

-- Install Engaging Device VAS 5161/6 with installation fork VAS 5161/5 in guide plate as shown in illustration.

-- Slide Valve Cotter Tool Kit - Assembly CartridgeVAS5161/8in guide plate.

-- Slide Valve Cotter Tool Kit - Spacer Ring - 22mmVAS5161/17 onto Valve Cotter Tool Kit - Assembly CartridgeVAS5161/8.

-- Slide installation cartridge in guide plate.

-- At the same time, rotate installation cartridge knurled screw right until points engage in valve retainers.

-- Move knurled screw back and forth slightly.

• Valve keeper are pressed against each other and capture in the installation cartridge.

-- Release the pressure fork.

-- Remove installation cartridge.

-- Unfasten guide plate and turn it aside.

• Pressurized air hose remains connected.

-- Remove the valve spring and the valve spring plate.

Procedure for Both Valve Rows:

-- Pull off valve stem seals with Valve Seal Removal Tool3364.

-- Lightly oil valve stem seal.

-- Slide valve shaft seal onto plastic sleeve.

-- Carefully press the valve stem seal onto the valve guide with the Valve Stem Seal Driver3365.

-- Remove plastic sleeve.

If the valve retainers were removed from the installation cartridge, they must be inserted in the Valve Retainer Inserting ToolVAS 5161/18.

• The large diameter of the valve retainers point upward.

-- Press installation cartridge from above onto valve retainer inserting tool and capture keepers.

-- Insert valve spring and valve spring plate.

• The large diameter -arrow- on the valve spring faces toward the cylinder head.

-- Fasten guide plate on cylinder head again as shown in illustration.

Outer Valve Row:

-- Insert installation cartridge in guide plate.

-- Press pressure fork down and pull knurled screw up, turning left and right.

• The valve keepers are inserted in this manner.

-- Release pressure fork with knurled screw still raised.

Inner Valve Row:

-- Insert installation cartridge in guide plate.

-- Press pressure fork down and pull knurled screw up, turning left and right.

• The valve keepers are inserted in this manner.

-- Release pressure fork with knurled screw still raised.

-- Repeat the procedure on each valve.

Assembling

Assemble in reverse order of disassembling. Note the following:

-- Install the camshafts, refer to CAMSHAFTS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install spark plugs, refer to Maintenance Booklet #406.

-- Install the ignition coil, refer to IGNITION COILS .
