Upper Oil Pan: Removing

The engine is removed and secured to the engine and transmission holder. Refer to ENGINE, SECURING TO ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION HOLDER .
Engine oil drained. Refer to Standard Maintenance Service .

-- Remove drive plate. Refer to DRIVE PLATE .

-- Remove left and right timing chain covers. Refer to LEFT AND RIGHT TIMING CHAIN COVERS .

-- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove oil filter housing. Refer to OIL FILTER HOUSING .

-- Remove lower timing chain cover. Refer to LOWER TIMING CHAIN COVER .

-- Remove the ribbed belt. Refer to RIBBED BELT .

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Remove ribbed belt tensioner from upper section of oil pan.

-- Remove bolt -3- and remove coolant pipe bracket.

NOTE:

Place a cloth under separation point to catch escaping coolant.

-- Remove coolant pipes -2 and 4- from generator.

-- Disconnect electrical connector -5- at generator.

-- Remove terminal 30/B+ -1-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

NOTE:

If generator is stuck in its bracket, screw in mounting bolt again up to 2 rotations.

Carefully tap the bolt heads with the flat side of a hammer to loosen the threaded sleeves for the generator mount.

-- Remove generator.

-- Remove bolts -arrows- and remove air generator bracket.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Remove front coolant pipe from engine and from coolant pump.

-- Disconnect electrical connector -2- at oil level thermal sensor -G266-.

-- Place the VAG 1782 under the engine.

NOTE:

There is still a residual amount of oil in lower section of oil pan.

-- Unbolt oil pan (lower section) -1- and pry out carefully.

-- Remove oil pump. Refer to OIL PUMP .

-- Remove bolts -1 to 7- for upper section of oil pan.

-- Press upper section of oil pan from alignment pins of cylinder block.
