Procedure
Refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .
Refer to TRANSMISSION, CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
-- Remove the left and right particulate filter. Refer to PARTICULATE FILTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the left and right catalytic converters. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTERS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the left rear coolant lines. Refer to LEFT COOLANT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the left and right air filter housings. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the generator. Refer to GENERATOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Loosen the bolt -1-. Remove the bolt -2- and nut.
-- Free up the right rear coolant pipe on the rear right engine lifting eye.
Ignore -arrows-.
-- Remove the left and right engine hood seal -1 - -arrow-.
-- Mount the Engine Support Bridge10-222A and ConnectionsT40091/3, Adapters10-222A/22and two threaded spindles -1- from the Lifting Tackle3033 on the fender bolting edge as illustrated.
- Spindles are at front.
-- Attach the hooks on the spindles -1- from the Lifting Tackle3033 to the left and right rear engine lifting eyes.
-- Install the additional Engine Support Bridge 10-222A parts as illustrated. Mount the Supports 10-222A/19 on the notches in the longitudinal members.
-- Slide the Support T40091/2 with the T40093/5 into both Connections T40093/4.
Secure the Support T40091/2 with the pins and splints from the Connector T40093/4.
-- Attach the Engine Support - Bracket w/Spindle and hook10-222A/10 into the front right engine eye.
-- Slightly pre-tension the engine by pulling the 3 spindles equally.
Only tension engine, do not lift.
-- Remove the rear driveshaft. Refer to REAR DRIVESHAFT .
-- Remove transfer case. Refer to TRANSFER CASE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolts -3-.
-- Loosen the bolt -1- and remove the heat shield -2-.
-- Remove ball head -2- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the Pry Lever80-200.
-- Remove the clips -1- and then remove the selector lever cable from transmission.
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
-- Remove the bolts -2- and remove the selector lever cable bracket.
-- Remove the left and right bolts -arrows- and remove the bracket for the catalytic converters.
-- Remove the bolts -1- and -2- and the left turbocharger bracket.
Ignore -3-.
-- Remove the bolts -1- and -2- and the right turbocharger bracket.
-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Free up the connector -2- on the bracket -5-.
-- Remove the bolts -1- and -4- and the nut -3-.
-- Remove the bracket and the double nut underneath it.
-- Disconnect harness connectors -1-3- from the transmission.
Place a cloth under separation point to collect to escaping ATF.
Refer to TRANSMISSION, CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and then remove the ATF Lines from the transmission.
-- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the Engine Bung SetVAS6122.
-- Insert the Crankshaft SocketT40058 guide pins as follows:
- The large diameter -arrow 1- faces the engine.
- The small diameter -arrow 2- faces the adapter.
-- Counterhold or turn the crankshaft using the Crankshaft SocketT40058 to loosen the torque converter bolts.
Danger of camshaft timing chain jumping off.
- Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.
-- Remove the cover -1- forward.
-- Remove the 6 torque converter bolts -arrow- in the opening for the started; to do this, turn the crankshaft 120° in direction of engine rotation.
-- Remove the bolts -3 through 6- and -10 and 11- that connect the engine to the transmission.
Screw -7- remains installed hand-tight.
-- Install Transmission Support3282 on Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A.
-- Lay the Transmission Support - Mounting Plate 493282/49 on the Transmission Support3282 as illustrated.
-- Align the arms of the transmission support to correspond with the holes in the adjustment plate.
-- Attach the support elements on the adjusting plate as illustrated.
-- Guide Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A with Transmission Support3282 under transmission.
The arrow symbol on the adjustment plate points in the direction of travel.
-- Align the adjusting plate so that it is parallel to the transmission.
-- Secure mount to threaded hole at back of transmission with an M10 x 20 bolt -arrow-.
-- Position side mounts at left and right in oil pan notch as shown in illustration.
-- Lift the transmission slightly.
-- Remove last connecting screw between engine and transmission.
-- Press transmission off of engine while pressing torque converter off of drive plate -arrow-.
-- Carefully lower transmission using Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A.
A torque converter that slips out can destroy the ATF pump driver if the Bracket - Multiple Use30-211A is mounted.
When converter is inserted correctly, distance -a- between contact surfaces on threaded holes and on converter and torque converter bell housing contact surfaces is at least 19 mm.
-- Use the Bracket - Multiple Use30 - 211A to secure the torque converter inside the transmission from falling out.
