Transmission, Removing

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Removing

-- Remove the left and right catalytic converters. Refer to Exhaust System, Emission Controls .

-- Remove the rear driveshaft. Refer to REAR DRIVESHAFT .

-- Remove the front driveshaft. Refer to FRONT DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the A/C compressor ribbed belt. Refer to RIBBED BELT TENSIONER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the generator bracket.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2-.

NOTE:

Ignore item -3-.

-- Place the Used Oil Collection And Extraction UnitSMN372500 under the transmission.

NOTE:

Pay attention to the rules of cleanliness when working on an automatic transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION, CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and then remove the ATF pipes from the transmission.

-- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the Engine Bung SetVAS6122.

-- Remove the bolt -1-.

NOTE:

Ignore item -2-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Remove the bracket for the right catalytic converter.

-- Disconnect the connectors -1, 2 and 3-.

-- Free up the ventilation hose -4-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

NOTE:

Ignore items -1, 2 and 3-.

-- Remove ball head -1- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the Pry Lever80-200.

-- Remove the bolts -2- and then remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

NOTE:

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Insert the Crankshaft SocketT40058 guide pins as follows:

-- Control the crankshaft with the Crankshaft SocketT40058 and an angled wrench to loosen the drive plate bolts.

CAUTION:

Danger of camshaft timing chain jumping off.

  • When mounting, turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

-- Remove the cover -2- forward.

-- Rotate each crankshaft 120° in the direction of engine rotation and remove the 6 torque converter bolts -1- in the opening for the starter.

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -3 to 11-.

-- Mount the Engine Support Bridge10-222A on the fender bolting edge as illustrated.

-- Engage the spindle carabiner hook into the rear engine lifting eyes.

-- Mount the Engine Support Bridge10-222A on the notches on the longitudinal member and install the remaining parts of the Engine Support Bridge - Engine Support 1910-222A/19 as illustrated.

-- Slide the Engine Support - Basic Set - SupportT40091/2 with the T40093/5 into both ConnectorsT40093/4.

WARNING:

Risk of accident if the engine support bridge is not secure.

  • Secure the Engine Support - Basic Set - SupportT40091/2 with the bolts and splints from the ConnectorT40093/4.

-- Attach the carabiner hook from the Engine Support - Bracket w/Spindle and HYook10-222A/10 to the front lifting eye on the right side of the engine.

-- Pretension the engine evenly using the three spindles, but do not lift.

-- Position the Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A with the Gearbox SupportT40173 under the transmission and secure it with a strap, as illustrated.

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the ATF pan.

  • Adjust the transmission support so that the transmission is not resting on the surface of the ATF pan.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- from the transmission support.

-- Separate the transmission from the engine by pushing the torque converter off the drive plate through opening for the starter that was removed earlier.

-- Carefully lower the transmission with the Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A.

CAUTION:

A torque converter that slips out can destroy the ATF pump driver if the Bracket - Multiple Use30-211A is mounted.

When converter is inserted correctly, distance -a- between contact surfaces on threaded holes and on converter and torque converter bell housing contact surfaces is at least 19 mm.

-- Use the Bracket - Multiple Use30-211A to secure the torque converter inside the transmission from falling out.

-- Secure the Lifting Tackle3033 to the transmission and to the transfer case as illustrated.

-- If it is necessary to separate the transmission from the transfer case, use the Shop CraneVAS6100 to lift the transmission with the transfer case off the Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A and set it down so it is not resting on the oil pan.

-- Separate the transfer case from the transmission. Refer to TRANSFER CASE OVERVIEW .



Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Removing

-- Remove the particulate filter. Refer to PARTICULATE FILTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the rear driveshaft. Refer to REAR DRIVE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the front driveshaft. Refer to FRONT DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the left coolant pipe from the transmission. Refer to LEFT COOLANT PIPE ON TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the upper left coolant pipes from the transmission. Refer to LEFT COOLANT PIPE ON TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the bolt -arrow-.

-- Disconnect the connectors -1, 2 and 3-.

-- Remove the bolts -2- and then remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

-- Control the crankshaft using the Crankshaft SocketT40058 to loosen the torque converter bolts.

CAUTION:

-- Remove the cover -2-.

-- Rotate each crankshaft 120° in the direction of engine rotation and remove the 6 torque converter bolts -1- in the opening for the starter.

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -3 to 10-.

-- Mount the Engine Support Bridge10-222A on the fender bolting edge as illustrated.

-- Engage the spindle carabiner hook into the rear engine lifting eyes.

-- Mount the Engine Support Bridge10-222A on the notches on the longitudinal member and install the remaining parts of the Engine Support Bridge - Engine Support 1910-222A/19 as illustrated.

-- Slide the SupportT40091/2 with the T40093/5 into both ConnectionsT40093/4.

WARNING:

Risk of accident if the engine support bridge is not secure.

  • Secure the SupportT40091/2 with the bolts and splints from the ConnectorT40093/4.

-- Attach the carabiner hook from the Engine Support - Bracket w/Spindle and Hook10-222A/10 to the front lifting eye on the right side of the engine.

-- Position the Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A with the Gearbox SupportT40173 under the transmission and secure it with a strap, as illustrated.

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the ATF pan.

  • Adjust the transmission support so that the transmission is not resting on the surface of the ATF pan.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- from the transmission support.

-- Carefully lower the transmission with the Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A.

-- Pretension the engine evenly using the three spindles, but do not lift.

NOTE:

Place a clean cloth under the separating point to catch the escaping ATF.

Pay attention to the rules of cleanliness when working on an automatic transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION, CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .

-- Remove the bolts -1, 2 and 3- and pull the ATF pipes off the transmission.

NOTE:

Depending on the date of manufacture, the ATF pre-heater and the bolts -2- are not attached to the top of the transmission.

-- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the Engine Bung SetVAS6122.

-- Separate the transmission from the engine by pushing the torque converter off the drive plate through opening for the starter that was removed earlier.

CAUTION:

A torque converter that slips out can destroy the ATF pump driver if the Bracket - Multiple Use30-211A is mounted.

When converter is inserted correctly, distance -a- between contact surfaces on threaded holes and on converter and torque converter bell housing contact surfaces is at least 19 mm.

-- Use the Bracket - Multiple Use30-211A to secure the torque converter inside the transmission from falling out.

-- Secure the Lifting Tackle3033 to the transmission and to the transfer case as illustrated.

-- If it is necessary to separate the transmission from the transfer case, use the Shop CraneVAS6100 to lift the transmission with the transfer case off the Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A and set it down so it is not resting on the oil pan.

-- Separate the transfer case from the transmission. Refer to TRANSFER CASE OVERVIEW .
