Instrument Panel, Removing And Installing: Removing
Position cable ties that were removed or cut away during removal in same place when installing.
-- Position steering wheel so that it is as far rearward and down as possible, using full adjustment range of steering column adjuster.
-- Adjust front seat all the way back and place backrest in 45° position.
-- Shift selector lever into "S" position.
-- Unlock the glove compartment cover.
- Follow all Safety Precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to PYROTECHNIC, ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM COMPONENTS, SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND TESTING PROCEDURES .
- Follow the allocation of the airbag unit to the instrument panel. .
-- Turn on the ignition.
-- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery with the ignition on. Refer to GROUND CABLE WITH Battery Monitoring Control Module -J367- FROM MY 09, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the airbag unit. Refer to Passenger Protection, Airbags, Seat Belts .
-- Remove steering wheel. Refer to AIRBAG STEERING WHEEL OVERVIEW .
-- Remove center console. Refer to CENTER CONSOLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove left side instrument panel cover. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL SIDE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- If present, remove screw -1- at air duct -2- and remove air duct.
-- Remove the headlamp switch. Refer to LIGHT SWITCH, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove lower instrument panel trim on driver side. Refer to LOWER DRIVER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove upper driver side instrument panel cover. Refer to UPPER INSTRUMENT COVER, DRIVER SIDE KNEE BAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Pull parking brake release cable -4- in direction of -arrow- out of bracket -3-.
-- Remove the nipple -2- from the parking brake release handle -1- and then remove the release handle.
-- Free up the release cable.
-- Remove steering column switch module STEERING COLUMN SWITCH MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the center instrument panel vent. Refer to CENTER INSTRUMENT PANEL VENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove CD Changer -R41-. Refer to CD Changer -R41-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, THROUGH 05/29/2009 .
-- Remove Climatronic Control Module -J255- (also called "Operating and Display Unit"). Refer to CLIMATRONIC CONTROL MODULE -J255- .
-- Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the Access/Start Authorization Switch -E415-. Refer to Access/Start Authorization Switch -E415-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- If present, disconnect electrical connector -arrow- on Indirect Ventilation Door Motor -V213-.
-- Remove right side instrument panel cover. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL SIDE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the glove compartment. Refer to GLOVE COMPARTMENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove passenger side instrument panel cover. Refer to FRONT PASSENGER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Follow all Safety Precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to PYROTECHNIC, ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM COMPONENTS, SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND TESTING PROCEDURES .
-- Remove the front passenger airbag unit. Refer to FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG UNIT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the front passenger airbag unit bracket. Refer to FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG UNIT BRACKET, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove indirect ventilation trim. Refer to INDIRECT VENTILATION TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove speaker from instrument panel. Refer to SOUND SYSTEMS OVERVIEW .
-- Remove left and right instrument panel screws -arrows-.
-- Remove the instrument panel vent electrical connectors on the right and left sides.
-- Remove instrument panel screws -1- and -2-.
-- Press electrical wiring harness -3- off installation frame with Pry Lever80-200.
For easier removal of wiring clips, use silicon-free lubricating spray if necessary.
-- Remove left and right screw -4- on installation frame.
-- Using a screwdriver, raise tab on installation frame at -arrow A- and pull instrument panel back from central tube -arrow B-.
Two technicians are needed to remove the instrument panel.
-- Remove instrument panel from the vehicle interior.
-- Lay instrument panel on a soft surface.
