Air Spring Damper and Wheel Bearing, Assembly Overview

1 - Wheel Bearing Housing

• Removing and installing → Wheel Bearing Housing, Removing and Installing 
• Servicing → Wheel Bearing Housing Bonded Rubber Bushing, Replacing 

2 - Eccentric bolt

• Adjust camber after loosening → Rear Axle Camber, Adjusting
• Do not turn more than 90 right or left (that is smallest to largest possible adjustment)

3 - Wheel bearing

• Replace → Wheel Bearing, Replacing 

4 - Tie Rod

• Removing and installing → Tie Rod, Removing and Installing 

5 - Slide washer

• Slide Washer, 85 mm Wheel Bearing, Replacing → Replacing slide washer, 85 mm diameter wheel bearings 
• Slide Washer, 92 mm Wheel Bearing, Replacing → Replacing slide washer, 85 mm diameter wheel bearings 

6 - Wheel hub

• Replace → Wheel Bearing, Replacing 

7 - Wheel bearing unit

• Removing and installing → Wheel Bearing Unit, Removing and Installing 

8 - Cover plate

9 - Bolt, 10 Nm

10 - Collar screw

• Always replace

Follow the correct sequence when loosening and tightening → Driveshaft, Removing and Installing .

• Torque specification → Installing  .

11 - Bracket

• For brake caliper wiring harness

12 - Connecting link

• Connects tie rod with wheel bearing housing and trapezoidal control arm.
• Removing and installing → Coupling, Removing and Installing 

13 - Washer

14 - Self-locking nut

• 75 Nm plus an additional 45 turn
• Always replace

15 - Driveshaft

• Removing and installing → Driveshaft, Removing and Installing 
• With 88 mm Outer Constant Velocity Joint, Servicing → Driveshaft with 88 mm CV Joint, Servicing 
• With 100 mm Outer Constant Velocity Joint, Servicing → Driveshaft with 88 mm CV Joint, Servicing 

16 - Cover

17 - Bolt, 23 Nm

18 - Backing plate

19 - Bolt, 70 Nm

• Firs tighten all bolts to 15 Nm. Then tighten all bolts to specification.

20 - Stub axle

21 - Bolt, 8 Nm

22 - Bracket

• For speed sensor wiring harness

23 - Wheel speed sensor

• With O-ring

24 - Trapezoidal Control Arm

• Removing and installing → Trapezoidal Control Arm, Removing and Installing 

25 - Bonded rubber bushing

• Bearing with large contact surface
• Always replace bearings on both sides of the vehicle
• Removing and installing → Wheel Bearing Housing Bonded Rubber Bushing, Replacing 

26 - Bonded rubber bushing

• Bearing with small contact surface
• Always replace bearings on both sides of the vehicle
• Removing and installing → Wheel Bearing Housing Bonded Rubber Bushing, Replacing 

27 - Cap screws

• Follow tightening sequence:
• 80 Nm and an additional 135 turn
• Rotate bolt back 360
• 80 Nm plus an additional 90 turn

• Always replace
• Raise wheel bearing housing to control position to remove lower bolts

28 - Eccentric washer

• Inner bore with tab

29 - Self-locking nut, 95 Nm

• Always replace
• Raise wheel bearing housing before tightening → Wheel Bearing Housing, Raising to Control Position to Tighten Bolts  (except for vehicle alignment)

30 - Bolt

• 80 Nm plus an additional 90 turn
• Always replace
• Rest vehicle on its wheels (standard level) before tightening

31 - Self-locking nut

• Always replace

32 - Transverse Link

• Removing and installing → Transverse Link, Removing and Installing 

33 - Self-locking nut, 9 Nm

• Always replace

34 - Bolt, 28 Nm

• 3x

35 - Air Spring Damper

• The boot must not have any pressure points. Correct them if necessary → Boot, Correcting Pressure Points .
• Note different suspension versions → PR Number Explanations .
• Removing and installing → Air Spring Damper, Removing and Installing 
• Servicing → Air Spring Damper, Servicing 

36 - Air line

• Colors: left rear - black; right rear - blue
• Air line, servicing → Air Line, Servicing
• Replace connector piece if leaking → Connector Piece, Replacing

37 - Connector piece, 3 Nm

• Always observe tightening torque!
• Only remove if vehicle is raised and air spring damper is unloaded (otherwise, there is a risk of injury from lowering vehicle)
• Replace air line → Air Line, Servicing or connector piece → Connector Piece, Replacing if leaking
• Clean connections before loosening

• Air escapes when connections are removed
• Protect threaded connection from dirt

38 - Residual Pressure Retaining Valve

• Do not loosen

39 - Bolt, 9 Nm
