Right flange shaft, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Drip tray V.A.G 1306
Removing
- Transmission installed.
- Loosen quick-release connectors - 2 - and remove rear noise insulation.
Vehicles with two front exhaust pipes:
- Remove sound insulation in right wheel housing - arrow -.
- Remove heat shield from transmission above right drive axle - arrows -.
All:
- Remove right drive axle from transmission flange and tie up.
- Place drip tray V.A.G 1306 underneath transmission.

- Remove flange shaft by placing a chisel or spacer piece - A - under flange shaft and by turning bolt - B -.
NOTE:
- If difficult to remove, rotate flange shaft and install bolt into the opposite threaded hole for removal of flange shaft.
- Replace flange shaft circlip.
- Clamp flange shaft in vise, using jaw protectors. Press circlip with new circlip - A - out of flanged shaft groove.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Clean flange shaft and seal.
- A damaged sealing ring must be replaced → Right flange shaft seal, replacing .
- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease G 052 128 A1 .
- Insert flange shaft by hand into splines of differential until splines lock properly into place.
- Press flange shaft in by hand or with needle bearing drift VW 295 as far as the stop.
NOTE:
- The circlip of flange shaft must be engaged.
- Fasten right drive axle to flange shaft → 40 - FRONT SUSPENSION .
- Check oil level in front final drive → Gear oil level in front final drive .
