Entering On-Board Diagnostic Function Modes

NOTE: Generic OBD-II compatible scan tool may be used but might have limited functionality.
  1. Ensure battery is fully charged, fuse No. 12 (10-amp) is not blown, and ground connections are okay. Locate Data Link Connector (DLC) under left side steering column. Turn ignition off. Remove DLC cover. Using Adapter Cable (VAG 1551/3), connect Scan Tool (VAG 1551) to DLC. V.A.G ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC will be displayed. 1-RAPID DATA TRANSFER or 2-BLINK CODE OUTPUT will also be displayed. If nothing is displayed on scan tool, see scan tool operating manual for instructions.
NOTE: Additional operating instructions can be obtained by pressing HELP on scan tool. During testing procedures, the right arrow key advances program to next step. An incorrect entry can be cancelled with "C" key.
  2. Turn ignition on. Press PRINT key to turn on printer. Enter rapid data transfer mode by pressing 1 on scan tool. RAPID DATA TRANSFER INSERT ADDRESS WORD XX will be displayed. Press 1 then 7 (17) to access instrument cluster mode.
NOTE: If address word 00 is entered and confirmed with "Q" key, VAG 1551 will perform automatic test routine by retrieving DTCs from all systems with rapid transfer functions.
  3. RAPID DATA TRANSFER 17-INSTRUMENT CLUSTER will be displayed. Press "Q" to confirm input. After 5 seconds, scan tool will display 8D0920830 (part number) of instrument cluster, VDO for VDO or M73 for Marelli (instrument cluster manufacturer codes), B5 (component designation-instrument cluster), D08 (software version), 02242 (instrument cluster code) and 06812 WSC (Workshop Code). For instrument cluster code definition, see FUNCTION MODE 07: CODING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  .
  4. Press right arrow key to advance program. RAPID DATA TRANSFER SELECT FUNCTION XX will be displayed. Select desired function mode and go to appropriate procedure. See FUNCTION MODE DESCRIPTION  table.
