Entering On Board Diagnostic Function Modes

NOTE: Ensure battery has a full charge, fuse No. 12 (10-amp) is not blown and ground connections are okay.
  1. Open rear passenger ashtray in center console and remove Data Link Connector (DLC) cover. Turn ignition switch off. Using Adapter Cable (VAG 1551/3), connect Scan Tool (VAG 1551) to DLC. If V.A.G SELF DIAGNOSIS HELP 1-RAPID DATA TRANSFER* 2-BLINK CODE OUTPUT* is displayed on scan tool, go to next step. If V.A.G SELF DIAGNOSIS HELP 1-RAPID DATA TRANSFER* 2-BLINK CODE OUTPUT* is not displayed on scan tool, check battery, fuses, ground and scan tool for proper connections.
    NOTE: Additional operating instructions can be obtained by pressing HELP key on scan tool. During testing procedures, the right arrow key advances program to next step. An incorrect entry can be cancelled with "C" key.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Press PRINT key to turn on printer. Enter rapid data transfer mode by pressing 1 on scan tool.RAPID DATA TRANSFER HELP ENTER ADDRESS WORD XX will be displayed. Press 1 then 7 to access instrument cluster mode.
  3. RAPID DATA TRANSFER Q 17-INSTRUMENT CLUSTER will be displayed. Press "Q" to confirm input. After 5 seconds, scan tool will display part number of instrument cluster, component designation (instrument cluster), D04 (software version) and instrument cluster code (00262).
  4. Press right arrow key to advance program. RAPID DATA TRANSFER HELP SELECT FUNCTION XX will be displayed. Select desired function mode and go to appropriate procedure. See FUNCTION MODE DESCRIPTION  table.

02 (1) Retrieving DTC Memory
03 (2) Output Diagnosis Test
05 (3) Erasing DTC Memory
06 (4) Exiting On-Board Diagnostics
07 (5) Coding Instrument Cluster
08 (6) Reading Measuring Valve Block
10 (7) Adaptation
(1) This mode is used to retrieve stored DTCs.
(2) This mode is used to test the different functions of instrument cluster components. This mode can only be performed when vehicle is stationary.
(3) This mode is used to clear DTCs.
(4) This mode is used to exit on-board diagnostics.
(5) This mode is used to code instrument cluster.
(6) This mode is used to observe various instrument cluster inputs.
(7) This mode is used to calibrate fuel gauge, set service intervals and change odometer reading.
