Adaptation after replacing the Engine Control Module (ECM): Requirements

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 Audi S8, 2003 Audi A8, 2002 Audi S8, 2002 Audi A8, and 2001 Audi S8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Insert old (authorized) ignition key into ignition lock and switch on ignition.
If no authorized ignition keys are available, then new ignition keys must be made and be adapted following "Adaptation after replacing Engine Control Module (ECM)."
Connect VAG 1551 scan tool and initiate OBD of the anti-theft immobilizer using address word "17". See ANTI-THEFT IMMOBILIZER ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD), INITIATING .

WAUZZZ4DZYN000126: 17 digit VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
AUZ7Z0W0801181: 14 digit identification number of control module for anti-theft immobilizer

Using the 14 digit identification number of the control module for anti-theft immobilizer, determine the secret number via direct query of the system (like direct query of the radio code).

CAUTION: The secret number is only intended for internal use and must not be shared with the customer!

NOTE: If a used Engine Control Module (ECM) is being installed, this must first be switched free via a login procedure. See LOGIN PROCEDURE, ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) . The secret number must be determined via the 14 digit identification number of the used Engine Control Module (ECM). Continue as follows after successful login procedure.

Press buttons -5- and -0-. This selects the channel for adaptation of the Engine Control Module (ECM) to the immobilizer, -50-.

Input the previously determined secret number, place a -0- before the 4 digit number (for example, 01915). If the secret number is entered incorrectly three times, tester display will indicate "locked 10." Adaptation is now locked for 10 minutes. This time is doubled after every third consecutive incorrect attempt, up to a maximum of 255 minutes.

After correct entry of the secret number and following a 4 second waiting period, the vehicle's VIN is indicated on the tester display.
