Removal And Installation

REMOVAL 

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable. Refer to SENSOR, INTELLIGENT BATTERY (IBS), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  3. Remove the powertrain assembly from the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  4. Remove the transfer case. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  5. Remove the transmission oil cooler line retaining bracket bolt (1a) and secure the bracket (1b) and the pipe out of the way.

  6. Remove the transmission heat exchanger oil cooler line retaining bolt (1a) and remove the line (1b) from the heat exchanger.

  7. Using a suitable tool, disconnect the transmission oil cooler line (1b) from the thermostatic bypass valve (1a).

  8. Remove the transmission heat exchanger retaining bolts (1a) and position the transmission heat exchanger (1b) out of the way.

  9. Remove the crankshaft position sensor retaining bolt (1) and remove the sensor with wiring and secure out of the way.

  10. Remove the front driveshaft heat shield retaining bolts (1a) and remove the heat shield (1b).

  11. Remove the transmission wire harness connector from the retaining straps (1).

  12. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness connectors (1).

  13. Remove the bellhousing inspection cover.

  14. Using a suitable tool turn the engine over in a CLOCKWISE DIRECTION ONLY  to access the torque converter bolts (1).
  15. Remove the torque converter bolts (1).
  16. Support and secure the transmission to a suitable jack or engine hoist.

  17. Remove the retaining nuts (1) securing the bellhousing to the engine.

  18. Remove the transmission (1).

  19. Remove the torque converter (1) from the transmission.

  20. Remove the extension housing bolts (1) and remove the extension housing (2).

INSTALLATION 

CAUTION:

When supporting or lifting the transmission at the oil pan the weight of the transmission must be distributed evenly on the lifting fixture. Failure to do so could damage the oil pan and transmission.

NOTE:

Make sure that the transmission dowel pins are seated in engine block and protrude far enough to hold transmission in alignment.

  1. Install the torque converter and verify it is fully seated in the bellhousing. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  2. Install the extension housing (2) and the extension housing bolts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
    NOTE:

    Hold the torque converter in place during transmission installation. 

    NOTE:

    Rotate the torque converter to line up with the flex plate holes before the transmission is bolted to the engine. 

  3. Using a suitable jack, align the transmission to the bellhousing studs and seat the bellhousing to the engine.
    NOTE:

    Verify the alignment dowel pins are seated in the alignment holes on the bellhousing.

  4. Install the bellhousing retaining nuts (1) and using a crisscross pattern tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  5. Install NEW  torque converter bolts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  6. Install the bellhousing inspection cover.

  7. Connect the transmission wiring harness connectors (1).

  8. Secure the transmission wiring harness connectors to the transmission using NEW  retaining straps (1).

  9. Install the front driveshaft heat shield (1b) and the retaining bolts (1a) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  10. Install the crankshaft position sensor and the retaining bolt (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  11. Install the transmission heat exchanger (1b) and the retaining bolts (1a) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  12. Install the transmission oil cooler line (1b) to the thermostatic bypass valve (1a).

  13. Install the transmission oil cooler line (1b) to the heat exchanger using a NEW  seal.
  14. Install the transmission oil cooler line to heat exchanger retaining bolt (1a) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  15. Install the transmission oil cooler line and the retaining bracket to the right intake manifold.
  16. Install the transmission oil cooler line bracket retaining bolt and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  17. Install the transfer case. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  18. Install the powertrain assembly into the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  19. Connect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  20. Fill the transmission to the specified level using the proper fluid

    Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .

  21. If the transmission was reconditioned (clutch/seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
  22. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
