Paddle Shifter Illumination Circuit Troubleshooting

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations - Refer to: SRS Component Location Index (2014 2015 2016), or SRS Component Location Index (2017 2018 2019 2020) and the precautions and procedures before doing repair or service.

NOTE: 

• If all illuminations of switches on the steering wheel do not come on simultaneously, check for a blown No. C16 (10 A) fuse in the under-dash subrelay box. Replace the No. C16 (10 A) fuse if it is blown, and recheck. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to body ground in the No. C16 (10 A) fuse circuit.
• Information marked with an asterisk (*1) applies to the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) line, and an asterisk (*2) applies to the paddle shifter - (downshift switch) line.

1. Determine possible failure area (paddle shifter, others)

   - 1. Remove the steering wheel.

   - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

   Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1

   Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2

   - 3. Test the paddle shifter.

   Is the paddle shifter OK?

   YES 

   The paddle shifter is OK. Go to step 2.

   NO 

   Replace the paddle shifter - Refer to: Paddle Shifter Removal and Installation (2014 2015), or Paddle Shifter Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020) .

2. Open wire check (R STRG ILL+ line* 1, L STRG ILL+ line* 2):

   - 1.Remove the steering commander switch assembly .

   - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
   	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test point 1	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 4* 1
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector No. 4* 2
   Test point 2	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 10* 1
   	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 3* 2

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   The R STRG ILL+ wire* 1/L STRG ILL+ wire* 2 is OK. Go to step 3.

   NO 

   Repair an open in the R STRG ILL+ wire* 1/L STRG ILL+ wire* 2 between the paddle shifter and the steering commander switch assembly, or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

3. Shorted wire check (R STRG ILL+ line* 1, L STRG ILL+ line* 2):

   - 1.Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
   	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test point 1	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 4* 1
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector No. 4* 2
   Test point 2	Body ground

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   Repair a short to ground in the R STRG ILL+ wire* 1/L STRG ILL+ wire* 2 between the paddle shifter and the steering commander switch assembly, or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

   NO 

   The R STRG ILL+ wire* 1/L STRG ILL+ wire* 2 is OK. Go to step 4.

4. Open wire check (R STRG ILL- line* 1, L STRG ILL- line* 2):

   - 1.Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
   	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test point 1	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 3* 1
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector No. 3* 2
   Test point 2	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 9* 1
   	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 5* 2

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   R STRG ILL- line* 1 is OK. Go to step 5.

   YES 

   L STRG ILL- wire* 2 is OK. Go to step 8.

   NO 

   Repair an open in the R STRG ILL- wire* 1/L STRG ILL- wire* 2 between the paddle shifter and the steering commander switch assembly, or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020) .

5. Open wire check (R STRG ILL+ line* 1):

   - 1.Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
   	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test point 1	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 5* 1
   Test point 2	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 12* 1

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   Repair an open to ground in the R STRG ILL+ wire* 1 between the audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) and cruise control combination switch connector (16P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

   NO 

   The R STRG ILL+ wire* 1 is OK. Go to step 6.

6. Shorted wire check (R STRG ILL+ line* 1):

   - 1.Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
   	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test point 1	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 5* 1
   Test point 2	Body ground

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   Repair a short to ground in the R STRG ILL+ wire* 1 between the audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) and cruise control combination switch connector (16P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

   NO 

   The R STRG ILL+ wire* 1 is OK. Go to step 7.

7. Open wire check (R STRG ILL- line* 1):

   - 1.Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
   	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test point 1	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 4* 1
   Test point 2	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 13* 1

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   The R STRG ILL- wire is OK. Go to step 8.

   NO 

   Repair an open in the R STRG ILL- wire between the audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) and cruise control combination switch connector (16P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020) .

8. Determine possible failure area (+B BACK UP line, others)

   - 1. Temporarily install the steering wheel, then connect the following connector.

   Cable reel connector D (20P)

   - 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

   - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle ON mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
   	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test point 1	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 16
   Test point 2	Body ground

   Is there battery voltage?

   YES 

   The +B BACK UP wire is OK. Go to step 9.

   NO 

   Go to step 13.

9. Determine possible failure area (SGND line, others)

   - 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle ON mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
   	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
   	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test point 1	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 3
   Test point 2	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 16

   Is there battery voltage?

   YES 

   Go to step 10.

   NO 

   Go to step 11.

10. Open wire check (LIN (METER) line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Cable reel connector D (20P)

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
    	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
    	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Cable reel connector D (20P): disconnected
    Test point 1	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 14

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Replace the steering commander switch assembly .

    NO 

    Repair an open in the LIN (METER) wire between the audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) and cable real connector (20P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

11. Open wire check (SGND line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Cable reel connector D (20P)

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
    	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
    	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected

    YES 

    Go to step 12.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the SGND wire between the cruise control combination switch connector (16P) and cable real connector (20P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

12. Open wire check (SGND line)

    - 1. Remove the cable reel.

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
    	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
    	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Cable reel connector D (20P): disconnected
    	Cable reel connector A (20P): disconnected
    Test point 1	Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 1

    Replace the cable reel .

    NO 

    Repair an open in the SGND wire between cable reel connector A (20P) and ground (G507), or repair poor ground (G507).

13. Open wire check (+B BACK UP line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Cable reel connector D (20P)

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
    	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected

    Repair an open in the +B BACK UP wire between the audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) and cable real connector (20P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

14. Shorted wire check (+B BACK UP line)

    - 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
    	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
    	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected

    	Audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Cable reel connector D (20P): disconnected

    YES 

    The +B BACK UP wire is OK. Go to step 15.

    NO 

    Repair a short to ground in the +B BACK UP wire between the audio remote / HFT- navigation voice control switch connector (16P) and cable reel connector D (20P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

15. Determine possible failure area (cable reel, others)

    - 1. Remove the cable reel.

    - 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 3. Turn the combination light switch to the PARKING (SMALL) position.

    - 4. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition	Vehicle ON mode
    	Combination light switch PARKING (SMALL) position
    	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1: disconnected
    	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected

    Replace the cable reel .

    NO 

    Go to step 16.

16. Open wire check (SGND line)

    - 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    	Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2: disconnected
    	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The SGND wire is OK. Repair an open in the +B BACK UP wire between cable reel connector A (20P) and the under - hood fuse/relay box.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the SGND wire between cable reel connector A (20P) and ground (G507), or repair poor ground (G507).
