Control Unit Input Test/Replacement

  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  2. Remove the left cargo area side trim panel (see TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - CARGO AREA ).
  3. Disconnect power tailgate connector (A) from the power tailgate control unit (B).
    NOTE: All connector views shown are the wire side of the female terminals

  4. Disconnect power tailgate connector (C) from the power tailgate control unit.
  5. Disconnect power tailgate connector (D) from the power tailgate control unit.
  6. Inspect all the connector and socket terminals to be sure they are all making good contact.
    • If the terminals are bent, loose, or corroded, repair them as necessary, and recheck the system.
    • If the terminals look OK, go to step 7.
  7. Reconnect all connectors to the power tailgate control unit, and do the following input tests:
    • If any test indicates a problem, find and correct the cause, then recheck the system.
    • If all the input tests prove OK, replace the power tailgate control unit.
    NOTE: After replacement, open and close the tailgate by auto operation and wait for 5 seconds. Repeat this procedure 5 times or more for proper operation.
    INPUT TESTS REFERENCE CHART

    Cavity Wire Test condition Test: Desired result Possible cause if desired result is not obtained
    A1 BLK Under all conditions Measure the voltage to ground: There should be less than 0.2V.
    • Poor ground (G901)
    • An open or high resistance in the ground wire
    A4 BLK Under all conditions Measure the voltage to ground: There should be less than 0.2V.
    • Poor ground (G901)
    • An open or high resistance in the ground wire
    B19 BLK Under all conditions Measure the voltage to ground: There should be less than 0.2V.
    • Poor ground (G901)
    • An open or high resistance in the ground wire
    A2 BRN Under all conditions Measure the voltage to ground: There should be battery voltage.
    • Blown No. 2-4 (PTG MTR) (40 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box
    • An open or high resistance in the wire
    B11 WHT Under all conditions Measure the voltage to ground: There should be battery voltage.
    • Blown No. 15 (10 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box
    • An open or high resistance in the wire
    B12 PNK Under all conditions Measure the voltage to ground: There should be battery voltage.
    • Blown No. 7 (PTG CLOSER) (20 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box
    • An open or high resistance in the wire
    C14 PUR Ignition switch ON (II) Measure the voltage to ground: There should be battery voltage.
    • Blown No. 5 (7.5 A) fuse in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box
    • An open or high resistance in the wire
    B8 GRN Transmission range switch in P Measure the voltage to ground: There should be less than 0.2 V.
    • Faulty transmission range switch
    • Poor ground (G101) or an open in the ground wire
    • An open or high resistance in the wire
    Transmission range switch in any other position than P Measure the voltage to ground. There should be battery voltage.
    • Faulty transmission range switch
    • A short to ground in the wire
  8. Reset the power tailgate control unit (see RESETTING THE POWER TAILGATE CONTROL UNIT ).
