VSA DTC 86-19 (With CAN Gateway (Without Auto Idle Stop System)) (2016)

DTC 86-19  : F-CAN Communication With Steering Angle Sensor Malfunction

NOTE:

86-19 F-CAN Communication With Steering Angle Sensor Malfunction    

DTCs (VSA)

  1. DTC check (VSA modulator-control unit)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 4. Start the engine, and let it idle for at least 5 seconds.

    - 5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    86-11 F-CAN Bus-Off Malfunction    
    86-19 F-CAN Communication With Steering Angle Sensor Malfunction    

    Is DTC 86-19 indicated?

    YES 

    If only DTC 86-19 is indicated, go to step 2.

    YES 

    If DTC 86-11 is also indicated, go to DTC 86-11 - Refer to:

    VSA DTC 86-11, 86-51  or

    NO 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting - Refer to:

    How to Troubleshoot the VSA System (2014 2015 2016) .

    If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.

  2. DTC check (CAN gateway system)

    - 1. Check for CAN gateway system DTCs with the HDS.

    DTC Description DTC
       

    Is DTC indicated?

    YES 

    Go to indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

    NO 

    Go to step 3.

  3. F-CAN circuit communication check

    - 1. Select the FUNCTION TEST in the CAN gateway with the HDS, then select the F-CAN Bus Connected Unit Check.

    Which result is indicated?

    VSA modulator-control unit (Bus A) is Not Available

    Go to step 4.

    VSA modulator-control unit (Bus B) is Not Available

    Go to step 5.

    Steering angle sensor (Bus A) is Not Available

    Go to step 6.

    VSA modulator-control unit and steering angle sensor are Detected

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting - Refer to:

    How to Troubleshoot the VSA System (2014 2015 2016)

    If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.

  4. Open wire check (F-CAN A_H, F-CAN A_L lines) 1

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector
    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 38 - Refer to:

    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 14
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 26 - Refer to:
    VSA Modulator-Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016)
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 15

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN A_H and F-CAN A_L wires are OK. Go to step 9.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the wire between the VSA modulator-control unit and the CAN gateway.

  5. Open wire check (F-CAN B_H, F-CAN B_L lines)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector
    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 31 - Refer to:

    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 11
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 20 - Refer to:

    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 10

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN B_H and F-CAN B_L wires are OK. Go to step 9.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the wire between the VSA modulator-control unit and the CAN gateway.

  6. Open wire check (F-CAN A_H, F-CAN A_L lines) 2

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    Steering angle sensor 4P connector
    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 Steering angle sensor 4P connector No. 2
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 14
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 Steering angle sensor 4P connector No. 3
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 15

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN A_H and F-CAN A_L wires are OK. Go to step 7.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the wire between the steering angle sensor and the CAN gateway.

  7. Open wire check (IG1 SAFETY line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle ON mode
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 Steering angle sensor 4P connector No. 1
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    The IG1 SAFETY wire is OK. Go to step 8.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the wire between the No. D23 (7. 5 A) fuse in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box and the steering angle sensor.

  8. Open wire check (SGND line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect the following connectors.

    Steering angle sensor 4P connector
    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle ON mode
    Test point 1 Steering angle sensor 4P connector No. 4
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there 0. 1 V or less?

    YES 

    The SGND wire is OK. Check for loose terminals in the steering angle sensor 4P connector and the CAN gateway 24P connector. If they are OK, substitute a known-good steering angle sensor , then recheck. If DTC 86-19 is not indicated after substitution, replace the original steering angle sensor .

    NO 

    Repair an open in the wire between the steering angle sensor and body ground (G507).

  9. VSA modulator-control unit check (update)

    - 1. Reconnect the following connectors.

    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector
    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 2. Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software.

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 4. Start the engine, and let it idle for at least 5 seconds.

    - 5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC 86-19 indicated?

    YES 

    Check for loose terminals and poor connections in the VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the VSA modulator-control unit .

    NO 

    Troubleshooting is complete.
