VSA DTC 86-16 (2014 2015)
DTC 86-16 : F-CAN Communication With SH-AWD Unit Malfunction
NOTE:

DTCs (VSA)
- DTC check
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
- 2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- 3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then to the ON mode.
- 4. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC Freeze Frame 86-11 F-CAN Bus-Off Malfunction 86-16 F-CAN Communication With SH-AWD Unit Malfunction Is DTC 86-16 indicated?
YES
If only DTC 86-16 is indicated, go to step 2.
YES
If DTC 86-11 is also indicated, go to DTC 86-11 - Refer to:
NO
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting - Refer to:
How to Troubleshoot the VSA System (2014 2015 2016) .
If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.
- SH-AWD control unit check
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then to the ON mode.
Do the SH-AWD indicator come on, then go off?
YES
Go to step 3.
NO
Do the SH-AWD system troubleshooting - Refer to: How to Troubleshoot the SH-AWD System (2014 2015) .
- Open wire check (F-CAN_L, F-CAN_H lines)
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Disconnect the following connectors.
VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) - Refer to: SH-AWD ® Control Unit Removal and Installation (2014 2015) .
- 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P): disconnected Test circuit F-CAN_L Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 26 (BLK) Test point 2 SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) No. 11 (BRN) Test circuit F-CAN_H Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 38 (WHT) Test point 2 SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) No. 1 (WHT) Is there continuity?
YES
The F-CAN_L and F-CAN_H wires are OK. Go to step 4.
NO
Repair an open in the wire between the SH-AWD control unit and the VSA modulator-control unit.
- SH-AWD control unit check (update or substitution)
- 1. Reconnect the following connectors.
VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) - Refer to: SH-AWD ® Control Unit Removal and Installation (2014 2015) .
- 2. Update the SH-AWD control unit if it does not have the latest software.
If the unit already has the latest software,
substitute a known-good SH-AWD control unit.
- 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
- 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then to the ON mode.
- 6. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC Freeze Frame 86-16 F-CAN Communication With SH-AWD Unit Malfunction Is DTC 86-16 indicated?
YES
Go to step 5.
NO
If the SH-AWD control unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the SH-AWD control unit was substituted, replace the original SH-AWD control unit - Refer to:
SH-AWD ® Control Unit Removal and Installation (2014 2015) .
- VSA modulator-control unit check (update)
- 1. Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software.
- 2. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then to the ON mode.
- 3. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC Freeze Frame Is DTC 86-16 indicated?
YES
Check for loose terminals in the VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the VSA modulator-control unit .
NO
Troubleshooting is complete. If any other DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting.
