VSA DTC 86-13 (Without CAN Gateway) (2016)
DTC 86-13 : F-CAN Communication With PCM (A/T) Malfunction
NOTE:
- Troubleshoot any PGM-FI DTCs first.
- Before you troubleshoot, review the general troubleshooting information - Refer to:
- According to the detected DTC(s), check the voltage supply and ground circuit of the control unit which cannot communicate with the VSA modulator-control unit.

DTCs (VSA)
- DTC check
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
- 2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- 3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 4. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.
- 5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC Freeze Frame 86-11 F-CAN Bus-Off Malfunction 86-13 F-CAN Communication With PCM (A/T) Malfunction 86-51 F-CAN Bus-Off Malfunction Is DTC 86-13 indicated?
YES
If only DTC 86-13 is indicated, go to step 2.
YES
If DTC 86-11 or 86-51 is also indicated, go to DTC 86-11 - Refer to:

NO
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting - Refer to:
How to Troubleshoot the VSA System (2014 2015 2016) .
If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.
- Open wire check (F-CAN A_H, F-CAN A_L lines)
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Disconnect the following connectors.
VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector TCM 58P connector - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected TCM 58P connector: disconnected Test circuit 1 Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 38 - Refer to:
VSA Modulator-Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) .Test point 2 TCM 58P connector No. 34 Test circuit 2 Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 26 - Refer to:
VSA Modulator-Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) .Test point 2 TCM 58P connector No. 47 Is there continuity?
YES
The F-CAN A_H and F-CAN A_L wires are OK. Go to step 3.
NO
Repair an open in the wire between the VSA modulator-control unit and the TCM.
- Open wire check (F-CAN B_H, F-CAN B_L lines)
- 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

YES
The F-CAN B_H and F-CAN B_L wires are OK. Go to step 4.
NO
Repair an open in the wire between the VSA modulator-control unit and the TCM.
- TCM check (update or substitution)
- 1. Reconnect the following connectors.
VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector TCM 58P connector - 2. Update the TCM if it does not have the latest software Refer to:TCM Update
or substitute a known-good TCM. Refer to:TCM Removal and Installation
- 3. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- 4. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 5. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.
- 6. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC Freeze Frame 86-13 F-CAN Communication With PCM (A/T) Malfunction Is DTC 86-13 indicated?
YES
Go to step 5.
NO
If the TCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the TCM was substituted, replace the original TCM .
- VSA modulator-control unit check (update)
- 1. Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software.
- 2. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 3. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.
- 4. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC Freeze Frame Is DTC 86-13 indicated?
YES
Check for loose terminals and poor connections in the VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the VSA modulator-control unit .
NO
Troubleshooting is complete.
