VSA DTC 86-13 (With CAN Gateway) (2016)

DTC 86-13  : F-CAN Communication With PCM (A/T) Malfunction

NOTE:

86-13 F-CAN Communication With PCM (A/T) Malfunction    

DTCs (VSA)

  1. DTC check (VSA modulator-control unit)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 4. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.

    NOTE:  Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

    - 5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    DTC Description DTC Freeze Frame
    86-11 F-CAN Bus-Off Malfunction    
    86-13 F-CAN Communication With PCM (A/T) Malfunction    
    86-51 F-CAN Bus-Off Malfunction    

    Is DTC 86-13 indicated?

    YES 

    If only DTC 86-13 is indicated, go to step 2.

    YES 

    If DTC 86-11 or 86-51 is also indicated, go to DTC 86-11 - Refer to:

    VSA DTC 86-11 (Without CAN Gateway) (2016)  or

    VSA DTC 86-11, 86-51  or

    or 86-51 - Refer to:

    VSA DTC 86-11, 86-51 

    VSA DTC 86-51 .

    NO 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting - Refer to:

    How to Troubleshoot the VSA System (2014 2015 2016) .

    If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.

  2. DTC check (CAN gateway system)

    - 1. Check for CAN gateway system DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC indicated?

    YES 

    Go to indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

    NO 

    Go to step 3.

  3. F-CAN circuit communication check

    - 1. Select the FUNCTION TEST in the CAN gateway with the HDS, then select the F-CAN Bus Connected Unit Check.

    Which result is indicated?

    VSA modulator-control unit (Bus A) is Not Available

    Go to step 4.

    VSA modulator-control unit (Bus B) is Not Available

    Go to step 5.

    TCM (Bus A) is Not Available

    Go to step 6.

    TCM (Bus B) is Not Available

    Go to step 7.

    VSA modulator-control unit and TCM are Detected

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting - Refer to:

    How to Troubleshoot the VSA System (2014 2015 2016) .

    If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.

  4. Open wire check (F-CAN A_H, F-CAN A_L lines) 1

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector
    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 38 - Refer to:
    VSA Modulator-Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) .
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 14
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 26 - Refer to:
    VSA Modulator-Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016), .
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 15

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN A_H and F-CAN A_L wires are OK. Go to step 8.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the wire between the VSA modulator-control unit and the CAN gateway.

  5. Open wire check (F-CAN B_H, F-CAN B_L lines) 1

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector
    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 31 - Refer to:
    VSA Modulator-Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016), .
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 11
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 20 - Refer to:
    VSA Modulator-Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016).
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 10

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN B_H and F-CAN B_L wires are OK. Go to step 8.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the wire between the VSA modulator-control unit and the CAN gateway.

  6. Open wire check (F-CAN A_H, F-CAN A_L lines) 2

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    TCM 58P connector
    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      TCM 58P connector: disconnected
      CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 TCM 58P connector No. 34
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 14
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 TCM 58P connector No. 47
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 15

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN A_H and F-CAN A_L wires are OK. Check for loose terminals in the TCM 58P connector and the CAN gateway 24P connector. If they are OK, update the TCM if it does not have the latest software , or substitute a known-good TCM , then recheck. If DTC 86-13 is not indicated after updating, troubleshooting is completed. If DTC 86-13 is not indicated after substitution, replace the original TCM .

    NO 

    Repair an open in the wire between the TCM and the CAN gateway.

  7. Open wire check (F-CAN B_H, F-CAN B_L lines) 2

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    TCM 58P connector
    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      TCM 58P connector: disconnected
      CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 TCM 58P connector No. 7
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 11
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 TCM 58P connector No. 20
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 10

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN B_H and F-CAN B_L wires are OK. Check for loose terminals in the TCM 58P connector and the CAN gateway 24P connector. If they are OK, update the TCM if it does not have the latest software , or substitute a known-good TCM , then recheck. If DTC 86-13 is not indicated after updating, troubleshooting is completed. If DTC 86-13 is not indicated after substitution, replace the original TCM .

    NO 

    Repair an open in the wire between the TCM and the CAN gateway.

  8. VSA modulator-control unit check (update)

    - 1. Reconnect the following connectors.

    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector
    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 2. Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software.

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 4. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.

    NOTE:  Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

    - 5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC 86-13 indicated?

    YES 

    Check for loose terminals and poor connections in the VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the VSA modulator-control unit .

    NO 

    Troubleshooting is complete.
