VSA DTC 86-12 (With CAN Gateway) (2016)
DTC 86-12 : F-CAN Communication With PCM (Engine) Malfunction
NOTE:
- Troubleshoot any PGM-FI DTCs first.
- Before you troubleshoot, review the general troubleshooting information - Refer to:
- According to the detected DTC(s), check the voltage supply and ground circuit of the control unit which cannot communicate with the VSA modulator-control unit.

DTCs (VSA)
- DTC check (VSA modulator-control unit)
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
- 2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- 3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 4. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.
- 5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC Freeze Frame 86-11 F-CAN Bus-Off Malfunction 86-12 F-CAN Communication With PCM (Engine) Malfunction 86-51 F-CAN Bus-Off Malfunction Is DTC 86-12 indicated?
YES
If only DTC 86-12 is indicated, go to step 2.
YES
If DTC 86-11 or 86-51 is also indicated, go to DTC 86-11 - Refer to:
VSA DTC 86-11 (Without CAN Gateway) (2016) or
or 86-51 - Refer to: VSA DTC Troubleshooting: 86-11, 86-51 (With CAN Gateway) (2016), or
NO
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting - Refer to:

If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.
- DTC check (CAN gateway system)
- 1. Check for CAN gateway system DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC Is DTC indicated?
YES
Go to indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
NO
Go to step 3.
- F-CAN circuit communication check
- 1. Select the FUNCTION TEST in the CAN gateway with the HDS, then select the F-CAN Bus Connected Unit Check.

Which result is indicated?
VSA modulator-control unit (Bus A) is Not Available
Go to step 4.
VSA modulator-control unit (Bus B) is Not Available
Go to step 5.
PCM (Bus A) is Not Available
Go to step 6.
PCM (Bus B) is Not Available
Go to step 7.
VSA modulator-control unit and PCM are Detected
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting - Refer to:

If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.
- Open wire check (F-CAN A_H, F-CAN A_L lines) 1
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Disconnect the following connectors.
VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector CAN gateway 24P connector - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

YES
The F-CAN A_H and F-CAN A_L wires are OK. Go to step 8.
NO
Repair an open in the wire between the VSA modulator-control unit and the CAN gateway.
- Open wire check (F-CAN B_H, F-CAN B_L lines) 1
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Disconnect the following connectors.
VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector CAN gateway 24P connector - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

YES
The F-CAN B_H and F-CAN B_L wires are OK. Go to step 8.
NO
Repair an open in the wire between the VSA modulator-control unit and the CAN gateway.
- Open wire check (F-CAN A_H, F-CAN A_L lines) 2
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Short the SCS line with the HDS.
- 3. Disconnect the following connectors.
PCM connector A (51P) CAN gateway 24P connector - 4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (51P): disconnected CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected Test circuit 1 Test point 1 PCM connector A (51P) No. 9 - Refer to:

YES
The F-CAN A_H and F-CAN A_L wires are OK. Check for loose terminals in the PCM connector A (51P) and the CAN gateway 24P connector. If they are OK, update the PCM if it does not have the latest software ,
or substitute a known-good PCM - Refer to:
PCM Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020)
then recheck. If DTC 86-12 is not indicated after updating, troubleshooting is completed. If DTC 86-12 is not indicated after substitution, replace the original PCM - Refer to:
PCM Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020)
NO
Repair an open in the wire between the PCM and the CAN gateway.
- Open wire check (F-CAN B_H, F-CAN B_L lines) 2
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Short the SCS line with the HDS.
- 3. Disconnect the following connectors.
PCM connector A (51P) CAN gateway 24P connector - 4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (51P): disconnected CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected Test circuit 1 Test point 1 PCM connector A (51P) No. 11 - Refer to:

YES
The F-CAN B_H and F-CAN B_L wires are OK. Check for loose terminals in the PCM connector A (51P) and the CAN gateway 24P connector. If they are OK, update the PCM if it does not have the latest software ,

then recheck. If DTC 86-12 is not indicated after updating, troubleshooting is completed. If DTC 86-12 is not indicated after substitution, replace the original PCM - Refer to:

Repair an open in the wire between the PCM and the CAN gateway.
- VSA modulator-control unit check (update)
- 1. Reconnect the following connectors.
VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector CAN gateway 24P connector - 2. Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software.
- 3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 4. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.
- 5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC Freeze Frame Is DTC 86-12 indicated?
YES
Check for loose terminals and poor connections in the VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the VSA modulator-control unit .
NO
Troubleshooting is complete.
