The electric motor is a three phase PMSM motor (Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Motor) which, amongst other things, means that the rotor section is pre-magnetised with permanent magnets. A synchronous motor with permanent magnets can be made smaller and lighter than an equivalent asynchronous motor.
A water duct connected to the low temperature circuit runs around the outer shell and cools the stator winding. Lubrication of the drive shaft bearings at the rear and front edges takes place via the oil in the gearbox.
When replacing ERAD, the electric motor must be synchronized using Volvo's VIDA software.
