Test Driving

WARNING: Problems with the brakes may make the car difficult to maneuver. Always test drive cars under safe, controlled conditions. Follow the appropriate traffic and speed regulations.

Disconnect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST)
Ignition off.
HINT: The ignition must be switched off so that the control module can connect the ABS system.

Start the engine and watch for the brake failure warning lamp. If this comes on, do not drive car. Check the brake fluid level instead:
1. The hydraulic braking system must be checked for leaks if the brake fluid level is too low
2. Fault-trace for the fault symptom if the brake fluid level is OK.

Test drive the car at a speed above 50 km/h
1. Stop the car if the ABS warning lamp lights or does not go out. Read off and note any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that have been stored. Carry out fault-tracing according to
2. If no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are stored but the light is on, carry out fault-tracing for the fault symptom.

Brake several times to stop from a suitable speed on an even, dry road. At least one braking should activate ABS control from a speed of above 50 km/h. Make a note of any unusual noises or abnormal behavior. Listen particularly for clicks or bangs. See whether the car pulls to one side or if the brake pedal does not seem to be working normally. Fault-trace according to the fault symptom.

Stop the car if the ABS warning lamp lights. Read off and note any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that have been stored. Also make a note of the driving conditions under which the warning lamp(s) came on. Fault-trace according to the VIDA symptom manager.

Brake repeatedly from a moderate speed to a standstill on a dry, even road, including at least one braking under ABS control from a speed above 50 km/h.

Note any abnormal noises and check if the car is acting abnormally.

Listen particularly for clicks or bangs. Feel whether the car "pulls" to one side or if the brake pedal does not seem to be working normally.
