The vehicle must be in normal mode in order to be drivable and have full functionality. In the event of a collision the vehicle is set to crash mode with a CAN message or via a hard-wired circuit between the Supplemental restraint system module (SRS) and the Central electronic module (CEM). If the vehicle is equipped with SOS On Call, a message is also sent via a hard-wired circuit to the Phone module (PHM). A temporary short-circuit of the hard-wired collision signal can cause the vehicle to temporarily be set to collision mode and the text message "CRASH MODE - SEE MANUAL" is then displayed on the combined instrument.
