Checking the wiring
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Volvo S40, 2003 Volvo S40, 2002 Volvo S40, 2001 Volvo S40, and 2000 Volvo S40. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Ignition off
- Check the cable between system relay terminal #5 and fuel pump (FP) terminal #D. Check for an open-circuit according to Open-circuit, permanent faults . Check the ground lead for fuel pump (FP) terminal #B. Check for an open-circuit according to Open-circuit, permanent faults
- Check the voltage between terminals #B and #D on the fuel pump (FP) connector. The voltage must be approximately 12 volts for 2 seconds when the ignition is switched on
- Try a new fuel pump (FP) if no fault is found during the above fault-tracing
- Remedy as necessary.
Other information

- Ignition off
- Check fuse 11 the integrated relay/fusebox in the passenger compartment. If the fuse is blown, check the circuit after the fuse. Check for a short-circuit to ground according to Short-circuit to ground, permanent faults
- Check the cable between fuse 11 in the passenger compartment fusebox and system relay terminal #1 (86). Check the cable between system relay terminal #2 (85) and control module terminal #10. Check these cables for an open-circuit according to Open-circuit, permanent faults
.
HINT: With the ignition on, the voltage at system relay base terminal #1 (86) must be approximately 12 volts.
