Checking the wiring and components

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Volvo S40, 2003 Volvo S40, 2002 Volvo S40, 2001 Volvo S40, and 2000 Volvo S40. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Check the resistance of the engine speed (RPM) sensor. The resistance must be between 250-350 Ω at 25 °C.

Remove the engine speed (RPM) sensor. Check that there is no dirt on the engine speed (RPM) sensor or flywheel. Check that there is no damage on the flywheel which could affect the signal.

Try a new engine speed (RPM) sensor if no fault is found during the above fault-tracing.

Remedy as necessary.
