Checking wiring

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Volvo S40, 2003 Volvo S40, 2002 Volvo S40, 2001 Volvo S40, and 2000 Volvo S40. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Check the engine control module (ECM) and engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connectors for contact resistance and oxidation according to Contact resistance and oxidation .

Check in particular for damage or loose terminal pins.

Check the signal cable between engine control module (ECM) terminal #47 and engine temperature (ECT) sensor terminal #1. Check for an intermittent short-circuit to supply voltage according to Short-circuit to supply voltage, intermittent faults . Check for an intermittent open-circuit according to Open-circuit, intermittent faults . Remedy if necessary.

Check the ground lead between engine control module (ECM) terminal #73 and engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor terminal #2. Check for an intermittent open-circuit according to Open-circuit, intermittent faults . Remedy if necessary.

If no faults are found in the above fault-tracing, try a new engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. See Replacing the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor .
