Mechanical Lock-up

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Volvo S40, 2003 Volvo S40, 2002 Volvo S40, 2001 Volvo S40, and 2000 Volvo S40. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Mechanical lock-up of the torque converter occurs at various speeds depending on the driving mode (Economy (E), Sport (S), Winter (W) and gear position (D, 3, L) selected. Other factors, in addition to road speed, are transmission temperature and engine load (throttle opening). Lock-up is engaged at +20°C-30°C oil temperature. Mechanical lock-up is also engaged in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears.

The speeds in the chart must be used as guidelines. This is because it is difficult to take exact readings of speed and throttle opening while test driving the car.
