Collision Protection Unit From Behind Front Seat: Removal

NOTE:

Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

Only applies to vehicles equipped with fixed backrest. 

Remove front seat. See FRONT SEAT .

CAUTION:

The operation has to be performed on both sides of the seat.

Torque:  Backrest cushion to seat cushion

45 Nm

.

Loosen and fold aside the backrest cushion's upholstery, see FRONT SEAT BACKREST (2006-2011)or FRONT SEAT BACKREST (2012) .

WARNING:

Be extra careful when handling the compressed spring.

Torque:  Fitting bolt, hinge

18 Nm

.

Torque:  Hinge bracket to backrest

9 Nm

.

REMOVING THE WHIPLASH UNIT ON NON-FOLDING SEATS

Remove the side panel from the seat and place to one side.

Detach the cover over the screws on the side of the seat.

Remove the 4 screws holding the backrest cushion.

Lay down the backrest cushion on the seat cushion.

Detach the backrest upholstery at the bottom edge. See: FRONT SEAT BACKREST (2006-2011)or FRONT SEAT BACKREST (2012) .

Release the folding mechanism.

Lift the spring off the stop using see 9512943 .

Pull the entire whiplash unit down to release one end of the whiplash element.

Remove the nut and the shaft.

NOTE:

Note the location of the bushing.

Slacken off and remove the upper screw.

Detach the bracket and remove the spring.

Angle out and remove the whiplash element.

Replace the rubber gasket with a new one.



REMOVING THE WHIPLASH UNIT ON FOLDING SEATS

Remove the side panel from the seat and place to one side.

Detach the cover over the screws on the side of the seat.

Release the catches on the reverse of the seat.

Fold the backrest cushion forwards.

Detach the backrest upholstery at the bottom edge. See: FRONT SEAT BACKREST (2006-2011)or FRONT SEAT BACKREST (2012) .

Release the folding mechanism.

Remove the 4 screws holding the backrest cushion.

Lift the spring off the stop using see 9512943 .

Remove the nut and the shaft.

NOTE:

Note the position of the 2 x bushings.

Remove the locking washer at the spring.

HINT: Use cutting nippers to facilitate removal of the locking washer. Then remove the spring.

Angle out and remove the whiplash element.

Remove and replace the rubber gasket with a new one.



REMOVING COMPONENTS

Use a hook to lift the spring from the stop.

HINT: Use: see  9512943  .

Remove the 4 M10 screws.

Lay down the backrest cushion on the seat cushion.

REMOVING THE WHIPLASH UNIT

Pull up the whiplash unit.

Remove:

Open the whiplash unit.

Unhook the whiplash element.

NOTE:

Note the position of the whiplash element and bushing. It is imperative that they are installed correctly.
