Checking the power steering balance when turning the steering wheel

Start the engine.

Turn the steering wheel to the right limit position and release.

Connect torque wrench 9998081 to the steering shaft screw and turn to the right with the torque wrench at the limit position to pressure level 1 on the manometer. Release the torque on the steering wheel.

Turn again at the limit position to pressure level 2 on the manometer. Read off the torque.

Repeat the procedure turning the steering wheel to the left.

NOTE: Do not hold the steering wheel at the limit position for each pressure level for more than 5 seconds.

Pressure level and torque

Standard steering gear:

Level 1 pressure 4 Mpa torque interval 2.5-5.5 Nm

Level 2 pressure 8 Mpa torque interval 3.0-6.0 Nm

Speed dependent steering gear:

Level 1 pressure 4 Mpa torque interval 1.5-4.5 Nm

Level 2 pressure 8 Mpa torque interval 2.0-5.0 Nm

NOTE: If the torque deviation is greater than 0.7 Nm to reach the same pressure the steering gear must be replaced. This applies to both with and without speed dependant steering gear.
