Intermittent fault
HINT: This problem may be caused by small air bubbles in the engine oil. The bubbles are air that has penetrated since the O-ring gaskets in the oil sump are old. Investigate the gaskets in the oil sump.
Check the resistance on camshaft reset valve between terminals #1 and #2. Resistance must be approximately 3.7 Ω.
Check the signal cable between Engine control module (ECM) terminal #A13 and camshaft reset valve terminal #2. Check for an open-circuit, short-circuit to ground and short-circuit to voltage.
Check the power supply cable between system relay terminal #5 and camshaft reset valve terminal #1. Check for an open-circuit.
Check the engine oil level and quality. Check for contaminants in particular.
Check the engine oil pressure.
Remove the camshaft reset valve. Check the oil ducts in the cylinder head for the camshaft's reset valve. Check for blockage and contamination.
If it is suspected that there are any contaminants in the camshaft reset valve it should be replaced.
HINT: The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can also be caused by a damaged variable valve timing (VVT) unit.
Remedy as necessary.
