Checking adaptation
- Start the engine.
Check the camshaft adaptation by reading off the adaptation values of the camshaft (flanks 1-4). All values must be between -7° and +7°.
Turbocharged engines: When checking, the accelerator pedal (AP) must be depressed slightly but the engine speed must be below 1200 RPM.
Naturally aspirated engines: When checking the engine must be idling.
HINT: Theoretically the values for flanks 1-4 should be the same, however because of mechanical tolerances the values may vary between the different flanks by approximately +/-2°.
If all the adaptation values are correct (between -7° and +7°) the fault is cured by adjusting the camshaft settings.
If the adaptation values are -20° or +20° (maximum adaptation) and the camshaft setting has been adjusted, the camshaft reset valve is defective.
If any adaptation value is between -20° and -8° or between +8° and +20° (not maximum adaptation but higher or lower than 7°) and the camshaft setting has been adjusted, the variable valve timing unit is defective.
Remedy as necessary.
