After installation a new immobilizer control module must be initiated (programmed). Information, such as which engine control module (ECM) it will be communicating with, must be programmed in. The immobilizer control module adapts communication accordingly. This adaptation cannot be changed. This means that the immobilizer control module cannot be transferred between different cars.

All cars with immobilizer have a unique have a unique PIN, Immobilizer-VGLA code and in certain cases a VIN code that is programmed in to the control module at the factory or when a defective control module has been replaced with a replacement part.

This/these codes cannot be changed. They are stored together with other information about the car in Volvo's database.

When programming control module keys, the control module security code is programmed into the transponder in the keys. When replacing with a new immobilizer control module, all keys must be replaced. The new control module does not recognize the previous control module security code.

When replacing a defective control module with a replacement part:

must be programmed in.

This is carried out during initiation of the Data Link Connector (DLC) in VIDA.
