Removal clutch components

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Volvo C70, 2001 Volvo C70, 2000 Volvo C70, 1999 Volvo C70, and 1998 Volvo C70. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Block the flywheel, use tools: 9995112 .

The following shall always be done if the existing clutch is to be installed again.

Fitting compression tool

If the clutch is to be replaced it can be removed without using the tool.

Fit the compression tool 9995662 on the clutch. Make sure that the catches grip securely in the clutch housing.

Screw in the screw so that it has contact with the clutch springs: Note the position of the handle with two grooves, these are used as alignment mark, then screw in two revolutions but not more. Check that the clutch plate can move sideways, use a drift.

If the clutch plate cannot be pushed sideways, tighten the screw some more.

Remove:

NOTE:

Loosen the screw on the tool so that the clutch spring is completely relieved.

Checking the flywheel

When checking a dual mass flywheel, rattling or noise shall be the primary indicator for replacing the flywheel, or that the surface for the clutch plate is severely damaged. The surface may be colored by high temperatures, and radial scratches may also appear without there being any malfunction.

However, the flywheel shall be replaced if there are transverse cracks.

The radial clearance in the flywheel between the primary and secondary mass varies, depending on engine version.

The clearance in a used flywheel always increases slightly compared to a new, which is not any defect. The secondary mass also moves more easily between the end-positions than a new, which absolutely shall not be regarded as a defect. The secondary mass also has an axial/warp clearance, which is normal as well.

To replace the flywheel, see: Flywheel, replacement .

Check the clutch

NOTE:

The clutch is changed as a complete unit together with a new clutch plate.

Check carefully for over heating damage, cracking, cracks, scoring or other damage on the friction surface.

Check that the thrust plate's spring is not damaged or cracked.

Check for warping. Use a ruler and a feeler gauge. Warping is only allowed in one direction according to the illustration above. Warping may not exceed 0.2mm  . If warping is greater, replace the clutch.

Checking the clutch driven plate

The clutch plate shall always be replaced if there are no transverse grooves in the friction pads. The plate shall also be replaced if the pads have been exposed to oil or grease.

Wipe off the clutch plate, use a dry rag. The plate shall be completely free of oil and impurities. Check that there are no cracks or other damage on the plate's center.
