PUR Bonded Windscreens, Replacing
Incomplete bonding of the PUR adhesive to aged undercoat has been noted when replacing windscreens. This applies to both the 1 and 2-component PUR adhesive types.
To ensure satisfactory bonding all bonding areas on the bodywork should in future be prepared using RIM activator P/N 1161373-4. This applies if there is are mixed bonding surfaces, for example undercoat, aged topcoat and old PUR adhesive residue. RIM activator ensures PUR adhesion in all combinations of adhesive surfaces and is used in order to the advantage of being able to avoid using several different activators.
If parts of or the whole bodywork flange is damaged the enamel primer is used as normal for those areas which are newly painted. In those cases where there both painted and unpainted surfaces both enamel primer and RIM-activator for the relevant areas.
RIM activator is best applied using the felt brush supplied with the PUR bonding kit. RIM activator evaporates fast so can bond the window after approximately 2 minutes.
RIM activator will shortly be included in the PUR adhesive kit.
Check the use by date on the PUR adhesive kit. Check both the packaging and the adhesive tubes. Do not use the PUR bonding kit if the Use By: date has been exceeded. The packaging may have either "Best before" or "Use by". The "Best before" should be interpreted as the use by date.
Note: When installing a PUR bonded windshield to the bodywork it is important that the glue does not come into contact with the spacers on which the windshield rest. There is a risk that the water leakage will occur at the spacers.
Note: A new lower windshield trim without butyl tape, P/N 9154227-4, has been introduced on cars from and including chassis number 117958 (854) and 27006 (855). If the windshield is to be changed on cars with lower chassis number one must be convinced that there is no old glass or similar in the trim butyl tape. If there is the trim strip must be replaced otherwise the new windshield can crack.
