The S40 information in this article applies up to early production 2004 cars. In mid-2004, Volvo introduced a redesigned S40. For early production cars, the 4th character of the VIN is V. For late production cars, the 4th character of the VIN is M. Early production S40 models are equipped with 1.9L, 4-cylinder engines. Late production S40 models are equipped with 5-cylinder engines.
