Diagnostic Procedure (Faulty Position)
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Start engine.
- Increase RPM and read out camshaft timing adaption (camshaft timing alterations). All values must be between -7° and +7°. When checking adaptation on turbo engines, the accelerator pedal must be depressed slightly but engine speed must be less than 1200 RPM. If all the adaptation values are correct (between -7° and +7°) the fault is intermittent. Go to step 3. If any adaptation value is incorrect (lower than -7° or higher than +7°), the fault is permanent. Go to step 4.
- If the DTC is stored but the adaptation values are correct, the fault is intermittent. The cause of the DTC is probably a defective camshaft reset valve. If the DTC resets after erasing the DTC and installing a new camshaft reset valve, the variable valve timing unit on the end of the camshaft may be defective. Repair as necessary. After repair, start engine. Increase RPM and use scan tool to read out camshaft timing adaption (camshaft timing alterations). All values must be between -7° and +7°. When checking adaptation on turbo engines, the accelerator pedal must be depressed slightly but engine speed must be less than 1200 RPM.
- If any adaptation value is incorrect (lower than -7° or higher than +7°), check the camshaft timing (timing belt may have slipped). Repair as necessary. After repair, start engine. Increase RPM and use scan tool to read out camshaft timing adaption (camshaft timing alterations). All values must be between -7° and +7°. When checking adaptation on turbo engines, the accelerator pedal must be depressed slightly but engine speed must be less than 1200 RPM. If all adaptation values are correct (between -7° and +7°) the fault is cured. If the adaptation values are NOT between -7° and +7°, go to next step.
- If the adaptation values are -20° or +20° (not maximum adaptation but lower or higher than +/-7 degrees) and the camshaft timing belt is adjusted correctly, the variable valve timing unit is defective. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
- After replacing variable valve timing unit, start engine. Increase RPM and use scan tool to read out camshaft timing adaption (camshaft timing alterations). All values must be between -7° and +7°. When checking adaptation on turbo engines, the accelerator pedal must be depressed slightly but engine speed must be less than 1200 RPM. If adaptation values are correct and DTC does not reset, diagnosis is complete.
