Torque from the vehicle's wheels

Power can be generated if the vehicle is on a sloping surface (through gravity). The torque is transferred from the vehicle wheels, through the differential to the final drive planetary gear.

In P  - position the final drive ring gear (16) is held by the transmission housing and the final drive driving sun gear (9)is held by the locked shift-lock (15). Because two parts of the planetary train are secured, power cannot be transferred.

In N  - position the shift-lock (15) is not engaged which means that the car can begin to roll.
