Checking Fuel Tank Pressurization (P0454, P0455/ECM-4308)

NOTE: Fuel tank must have maximum 13.2 gallons (50 liters) in it at time of test.
  1. Ignition OFF.
  2. Connect hose from fuel tank to EVAP canister.
  3. Clamp hose between EVAP canister shut-off valve and EVAP canister with a hose clip to seal it off. See Fig 1.

  4. Carefully disconnect EVAP canister hose from canister purge valve.
  5. Connect Manometer (999 5646), or equivalent, to hose and attach Pressure Regulator (999 5544) to manometer. See Fig 2.

  6. Set pressure to 1.02 psi (7 kPa). Set valve handle at right angles to the hoses. Let pressure build up for 5 minutes. Shut off valve handle. Pressure may drop .15-.29 psi (1-2 kPa) before stabilizing. Wait 10 minutes and read out pressure. Pressure should be stable. Pressure may raise slightly due to evaporation. If pressure is stable, go to step  7. If pressure is NOT stable, go to step  10.
    WARNING: DO NOT exceed 1.45 psi (10 kPa) when pressurizing fuel system. DO NOT leave vehicle unattended while fuel system is pressurized.
  7. Check fuel tank pressure sensor. Disconnect Manometer (999 5646). Connect EVAP canister hose. Remove hose clamp from hose between canister purge valve and intake manifold. Connect a scan tool. Start engine and let idle. Read out fuel tank pressure and canister purge valve value. When canister purge valve opens, fuel tank pressure should drop. If pressure drops, go to step  8. If pressure does NOT drop, go to step  9.
  8. Check hose to EVAP canister shut-off valve seal and check connectors. If problem was found and repaired, go to VERIFICATION . If no repairs to EVAP canister shut-off hose are necessary and fault remains, replace EVAP canister shut-off valve. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - EXCEPT S40 & V40 article. Go to VERIFICATION .
  9. Check fuel tank pressure sensor hose. Ignition OFF. Remove fuel tank pressure sensor. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - EXCEPT S40 & V40 article. Remove hose with Y-nipple. Check that nipple and hoses are not blocked. Repair as necessary and go to VERIFICATION . If no fault is found in tank pressure sensor hose and fault remains, replace fuel tank pressure sensor. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - EXCEPT S40 & V40 article. Go to VERIFICATION .
  10. Check fuel tank system. Ignition OFF. Carefully pressurize fuel tank system to 1.02 psi (7 kPa). Set valve handle at right angles to hoses. Check fuel tank system by spraying soapy water from EVAP canister to canister purge valve. Spray the line between fuel tank and EVAP canister shut-off valve. Check filler pipe and fuel tank filler cap. It may be necessary to lower the fuel tank in order to fault-trace hoses and connectors on top. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. Go to VERIFICATION .
    CAUTION: DO NOT exceed 1.45 psi (10 kPa) when pressurizing fuel system.
