Checking & Adjusting Pressure Regulator (6-Cylinder Engine)

The 6-cylinder engine is equipped with 2 turbochargers. Turbo 1 is for cylinder Nos. 1, 2 and 3. Turbo 2 is for cylinder Nos. 4, 5 and 6.

NOTE: Always check and adjust, if necessary, both turbocharger pressure regulators, not just one.
  1. Remove the cross stay between the engine compartment shock towers.
  2. Remove turbocharger plastic charge air pipe. Remove the turbocharger plastic intake pipe.
  3. Remove the turbocharger pressure regulator hoses at the "T" connection.
  4. Position the turbo 1 pressure regulator hose so that it can be reached from under the car.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the lower splash guard.
  6. Pull the hose down from the turbo 1 pressure regulator. Remove the split pin from the lever. See Figure.
  7. Connect Manometer (999 5646) to pressure regulator hose to turbo 1. Connect Pressure Regulator (999 5544) to manometer. Screw out adjustment screw for pressure regulator completely. Connect compressed air to pressure regulator. Screw in adjustment screw for pressure regulator so manometer displays value applicable to relevant engine. See Figure and ADJUSTMENT BOOST PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS (6-CYLINDER)  table.
    NOTE: When taking readings manometer must always hang vertically from its hook. This is to ensure that correct values are obtained. Set 3-way junction connector handle in its middle position. 3-way junction connector has a vent (drilled hole) where it connects to pressure regulator. This facilitates setting correct pressure.
    CAUTION: Push rod MUST be mounted on lever when lock-nut is adjusted. The diaphragm in pressure regulator will be damaged if push rod is twisted.
  8. Push lever for boost pressure control valve towards turbocharger housing. Boost pressure control valve must be closed. Check that push rod locates on lever lug. If necessary, adjust push rod until it locates. See Figure.
  9. Reinstall split pin on lever. Tighten lock-nut on push rod. Remove test equipment. Connect hose. Install lower splash guard. Lower vehicle to ground.
  10. Remove turbo 2 intake pipe. Remove charge air pipe from turbo 2. Remove the heat deflector plate from turbo 2. Vehicle may have to be raised for access to turbo 2.
  11. Repeat steps  7 and  8 for checking and adjusting turbo 2 pressure regulator.
  12. Install split pin on turbo 2 lever. Tighten lock-nut on lever, if loosened.
  13. Remove the test equipment. Install heat deflector plate over turbo 2. Tighten bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m).
  14. Install the charge air pipes to the turbo 2. Align against the plastic pipes and tighten.
  15. Install the cross stay between the engine compartment shock towers. Tighten shock tower bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 N.m). Tighten engine bolt to 59 ft. lbs. (80 N.m).
  16. Install plastic pipes and hoses to turbo 2 pressure regulator.
  17. Erase fault memory. Test drive car and accelerate to wide open throttle at least twice. Then check that no DTCs have been stored.
