Steering Wheel & Contact Reel: Removal

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
  2. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Mark steering wheel-to-column location for installation reference. Remove driver-side air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULES .
  3. Loosen steering wheel retaining bolt. Remove contact reel locking screw from storage position and secure in lock position. See Figure. Move plastic tape with screw. Remove steering wheel retaining bolt. Carefully lift steering wheel from column without turning wheel, allowing wiring and plastic tape to pass through hole in steering wheel.
  4. Remove steering column upper and lower covers. Remove 3 contact reel mounting screws. See Figure. Disconnect contact reel harness connector and remove contact reel.
