Diagnostic Procedure
- Remove canister purge valve. Remove fresh air intake tube between front plate and air cleaner housing. Pull canister purge valve from bracket on fan shroud. Mark each hose before removing. Remove hoses from canister purge valve. See Fig 1.
- Check resistance between canister purge valve terminals. See Figure. Resistance should be approximately 29.7 +/- 1.4 ohms. If not within specification, replace faulty canister purge valve. Reverse removal procedure in step 1) to install canister purge valve.
- Connect breakout box. See CONNECTING & DISCONNECTING BREAKOUT BOX .
- Check signal cable between PCM terminal A9 and canister purge valve terminal No. 2 for an open circuit, a short to ground and a short to supply voltage. Check the power supply between system relay terminal No. 3 and canister purge valve terminal No. 1 for an open-circuit or a short to ground. See Figure. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS
article. Repair as necessary and verify.NOTE: Using an electrician's screwdriver with at least a 3-Watt (minimum) bulb will help diagnosis with short to supply voltage.
- Turn ignition OFF. Ensure all components and connectors are installed properly. Connect a scan tool, turn ignition ON and activate canister purge valve. An audible "click" sound will be heard if purge valve is working properly.
