Diagnostic Procedure (Slow Control)
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Start engine.
- Read camshaft shift angle and the desired camshaft shift angle.
- Check at idle speed and at about 4000 RPM that the actual camshaft shift angle, desired value, corresponds to the actual camshaft shift angle to an accuracy of +/- 3 degrees. Carry out the check at a stable engine RPM. Go to next step.NOTE: Before engine RPM stabilizes, the difference in values may be more than +/- 3 degrees for about 1 second. This is normal.
- If the values correspond with an accuracy of +/- 3 degrees, it indicates that the fault is intermittent. If the values deviate by more than 3 degrees, it indicates that the fault is permanent. Go to next step.
- Check reset valve resistance between terminals No. 1 and 2. See Figure. Resistance should be approximately 3.7 ohms. If resistance is not within specification, replace faulty reset valve. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - EXCEPT S40 & V40 article.
- Check signal cable between ECM terminal A13 and camshaft reset valve terminal No. 2 for the following:
- Short circuit to ground
- Open circuit
- Short circuit to supply voltage
Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
- Check the power supply cable between system relay terminal No. 5 and camshaft reset valve terminal No. 1 for an open circuit. See Figure. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
- Check engine oil level and quality. Check for oil contaminants. Ensure engine oil pressure is normal. Remove camshaft reset valve. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - EXCEPT S40 & V40
article. Check oil ducts in camshaft reset valve in cylinder head for blockages and contaminants. Replace camshaft reset valve if there are any contaminants in valve. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.NOTE: Normal engine oil pressure is about 14.5 psi at idle and 50.75 at 4000 RPM. Oil pressure is measured at normal operating temperature.
- Turn off ignition. Reinstall connectors and components. Start engine.
- Check at idle speed and at about 4000 RPM that the actual camshaft shift angle, desired value, corresponds to the actual camshaft shift angle to an accuracy of +/- 3 degrees. Carry out the check at a stable engine RPM.NOTE: Before engine RPM stabilizes, the difference in values may be more than +/- 3 degrees for about 1 second. This is normal.
- If values are within specification and DTC does not reset, diagnosis is done. If values are not correct, check for possible faulty variable valve timing unit.
