Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector.
  2. Check vacuum downstream of canister purge valve. Disconnect hose between canister purge valve and EVAP canister from canister purge valve. Start engine and let it idle. Read out canister purge valve pulse signal. There should not be vacuum in canister purge valve when pulse signal is 0%. If vacuum is present, go to next step. If no vacuum is present, go to  4.
  3. Check canister purge valve for dirt, deposits and damage. Activate canister purge valve to see that no malfunction has occurred. Check that canister purge valve is not sticking when it has been activated. An audible "click" sound will be heard if canister purge valve is working properly. If canister purge valve is damaged or not working properly, replace with a known good unit. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - EXCEPT S40 & V40 article. Verify repair. Connect a scan tool and start engine. Using a scan tool, run a quick fuel system test. If system is OK, repair is complete.
  4. Check for intermittent faults. Read out fault memory and run a quick fuel system test using a scan tool. If fault is no longer present, repair is complete. If canister purge valve is OK and fault remains, check for other DTCs and diagnose as necessary.
