Diagnostic Procedure
- Unplug reset valve connector. Check reset valve resistance between terminals No. 1 and 2. See Figure. Resistance should be approximately 3.7 ohms. If resistance is as specified go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace faulty reset valve. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - EXCEPT S40 & V40 article. Verify repair. Ignition OFF. Ensure connectors and components are installed properly. Connect a scan tool and start engine. Increase RPM and read out camshaft timing alterations. If DTC does not reset and camshaft timing varies, diagnosis is complete. If no timing alterations happen or if DTC remains, go to next step.
- Connect breakout box. See CONNECTING & DISCONNECTING BREAKOUT BOX .NOTE: With ignition ON and camshaft reset valve connector disconnected, voltage on connector terminal No. 1 should be approximately battery voltage and connector terminal No. 2 should be a pulse modulated signal with top voltage at approximately battery voltage and with a frequency of approximately 250 Hz.
- Check signal cable between ECM terminal A13 and camshaft reset valve terminal No. 2 for an open circuit, a short to ground and a short to supply voltage. See Figure. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
- Disconnect breakout box when wiring repair is complete. See CONNECTING & DISCONNECTING BREAKOUT BOX . Verify repair. Ignition OFF. Ensure connectors and components are installed properly. Connect a scan tool and start engine. Increase RPM and read out camshaft timing alterations. If alterations are correct and DTC no longer exists, repair is complete.
