Timing Belt: Removal
CAUTION:
DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshafts while belt is removed.
- Remove key from ignition switch. Remove accessory drive (serpentine) belt. See Fig 1 or Fig 2
. On S60 models, remove the cross brace between the front shock towers.

- On all models, remove upper timing belt cover. Remove power steering pump reservoir with hoses attached, and set aside. Remove coolant reservoir and set aside. Remove accessory drive belt.
- Remove front timing belt cover. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove nut from fender liner cover. Remove upper timing belt cover.
- Turn crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) to align the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and camshaft sprockets. See Fig 3. Turn crankshaft an additional 1/4 turn clockwise, and then back again until the timing marks align.
- Loosen timing belt tensioner pulley center bolt. Holding center bolt, turn the tensioner eccentric clockwise with a 6-mm Allen wrench. Turn eccentric until the hole for the Allen wrench is at the 10 o'clock position.
- Raise and support vehicle. Holding vibration damper stationary with Counterhold (999 5433) or equivalent, remove vibration damper center bolt. Remove vibration damper. Lower vehicle. Remove timing belt.
CAUTION:
Vibration damper pulley bolts are torque-to-yield type. If vibration damper pulley bolts are removed so that Counterhold (999 5433) or equivalent can be installed, pulley bolts MUST be replaced.
