Timing Belt: Removal

CAUTION: DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshafts while belt is removed.
  1. Remove key from ignition switch. Remove accessory drive (serpentine) belt. See Fig 1 or Fig 2 . On S60 models, remove the cross brace between the front shock towers.

  2. On all models, remove upper timing belt cover. Remove power steering pump reservoir with hoses attached, and set aside. Remove coolant reservoir and set aside. Remove accessory drive belt.
  3. Remove front timing belt cover. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove nut from fender liner cover. Remove upper timing belt cover.
  4. Turn crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) to align the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and camshaft sprockets. See Fig 3. Turn crankshaft an additional 1/4 turn clockwise, and then back again until the timing marks align.
  5. Loosen timing belt tensioner pulley center bolt. Holding center bolt, turn the tensioner eccentric clockwise with a 6-mm Allen wrench. Turn eccentric until the hole for the Allen wrench is at the 10 o'clock position.
  6. CAUTION: Vibration damper pulley bolts are torque-to-yield type. If vibration damper pulley bolts are removed so that Counterhold (999 5433) or equivalent can be installed, pulley bolts MUST be replaced.
  7. Raise and support vehicle. Holding vibration damper stationary with Counterhold (999 5433) or equivalent, remove vibration damper center bolt. Remove vibration damper. Lower vehicle. Remove timing belt.
