Timing Belt: Removal
CAUTION:
Remove the ignition key from the ignition switch before beginning work.
CAUTION:
To prevent engine damage, DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshafts while timing belt is removed.
- Remove the upper timing belt cover. Remove the power steering servo reservoir and the expansion tank. Lift up and place on top of the engine. Take care not to spill servo oil from the bleed hole in the cap. Place paper wipe around the reservoir and then cover with a plastic bag as protection.
- Remove the accessory drive belt (fan belt). See DRIVE BELT ROUTING . Remove the front timing belt cover. Raise the car. Remove the right front wheel.
- Set up the engine. Remove the nuts from the cover on the fender liner. Position the upper timing cover. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the markings on the crankshaft and camshafts correspond. See Figure. Remove the upper timing cover.
- Turn the crankshaft a further 1/4 turn clockwise and then back again until the markings correspond. Remove the upper timing belt cover.
- Loose the belt tensioner center bolt slightly. Hold the center bolt still and turn the tensioner eccentric clockwise with a 6 mm Allen key to 10 o'clock position. See Figure. Remove the timing belt.
- Remove 4 mounting bolts and the vibration damper (drive belt pulley).
- If replacing the front crankshaft oil seal, install Counterhold (999 5433). Secure counterhold and remove the crankshaft center nut. See Figure. Work the vibration damper (pulley) loose and remove by hand. Remove the timing belt.CAUTION: To prevent engine damage, DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshafts while timing belt is removed.
