Crankshaft Front Seal & Oil Pump: Installation

  1. Install a new gasket and new "O" ring around the pump housing. Screw in Sliding Sleeve (999 5747). See Fig 1. Carefully slide in the oil pump over the crankshaft end. Take great care so that the sealing ring in the oil pump is not damaged during installation. Carefully tap in the oil pump with a rubber mallet. Apply thread sealant (11-61 056), or equivalent, to oil pump bolts. Tighten the bolts crosswise to specification. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS - 2.3L & 2.4L, 5-CYLINDER article.

    2. NOTE: The timing gear pulley can only be in one position on the crankshaft end splines.
  2. Install the crankshaft timing gear pulley. Carefully tap alternately around the wheel until end position is reached.
  3. Install the vibration damper. Install the timing belt over the crankshaft pulley wheel. Install the vibration damper. Tighten the center nut to specification. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS - 2.3L & 2.4L, 5-CYLINDER article. Use Counterhold (999 5433). See Figure.
  4. Remove the counterhold and install new bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS - 2.3L & 2.4L, 5-CYLINDER article.
  5. Install the camshaft belt. Install the upper camshaft belt cover. Check that the markings on the crankshaft and camshaft timing gear pulley correspond. See Figure.
  6. Install the belt in the following order;
    • Crankshaft
    • Idler pulley
    • Intake camshaft
    • Exhaust camshaft. See Figure.
    • Water pump
    • Belt tensioner. See Figure.
  7. Tighten the timing belt. This adjustment is always carried out on a cold engine 68°F (20°C). At higher temperatures (with the engine at operating temperature or a high outside temperature for example) the indicator is further to the right. See Figure.
  8. Turn the crankshaft clockwise carefully until the camshaft belt is tensioned. The belt must be tight between the intake cam, the idler pulley and the crankshaft. Hold the belt tensioner center bolt secure and turn the belt tensioner eccentric counterclockwise until the tensioner indicator passes the marked position. Then turn the eccentric back so that the indicator reaches the marked position in the center of the window. Secure the eccentric and tighten the center bolt to specification. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS - 2.3L & 2.4L, 5-CYLINDER .
  9. Check that the indicator is in the correct position. A new alignment must be carried out if the indicator is not in the correct position. Press the belt to check that the indicator on the tensioner moves easily.
  10. Install the upper timing belt cover. Turn the crankshaft 2 turns and check that the markings on the crankshaft and camshaft pulley correspond. Check that the indicator on the belt tensioner is within the marked position.
  11. Install the nuts for the cover in the fender liner. Install the front wheel. Install the front camshaft belt cover. Install the upper camshaft belt cover. Install the auxiliaries belt (fan belt). Install the expansion tank and servo reservoir. Ensure that the hoses are correctly positioned.
  12. Check the oil level and top up if required. Start the engine. Check that there is no leakage. Stop the engine and recheck the oil level.
