Removal (6-Cylinder)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 15 other vehicles, including the 1998 Volvo V90, 1998 Volvo S90, 1997 Volvo V90, 1997 Volvo S90, and 1997 Volvo 960. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove auxiliary (serpentine) drive belt, front transmission cover splash guard under engine, vibration damper guard, and ignition coil cover.
  2. Turn crankshaft clockwise until timing marks on camshaft pulleys/transmission plate and crankshaft pulley/oil pump housing are aligned. See Figure. Remove upper timing belt cover.
  3. Wait 5 minutes after aligning the timing belt. Check hydraulic tensioner condition (this is done by checking timing belt tension) and check timing belt hydraulic tensioner condition using Belt Tension Gauge (998-8500). See Figure. Read belt tension gauge using mirror. Specification for 6-cylinder timing belt tension is 3.5-4.6 units. If timing belt tension is not within specification, hydraulic tensioner must be replaced.
  4. Remove tensioner upper mounting bolt, and loosen lower mounting bolt. Twist tensioner to free plunger/pulley. If reusing old timing belt, mark belt with arrow to indicate rotation direction. Remove lower bolt, tensioner, and timing belt.
  5. Engines with automatic timing belt tensioners should have the lever bushing greased every time the belt is changed or the tension pulley removed. The lever arm must be greased so that the bearing does not stick and give the wrong tension.
  6. Remove the tension pulley lever screw, tension pulley and sleeve behind screw. Grease the surfaces on the lever bushing, the screw and the sleeve with grease P/N. 11 61 246-2 (50g) or 11 61 247-0 (500g). Install all components and torque to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
