DTC CI-221: Speed Signal Absent

  1. This DTC will set if instrument cluster does not register a speed signal (input signal) when engine speed signal exceeds 1500 RPM for at least one minute and engine temperature exceeds 122°F (50°C).
  2. Speedometer may read too low or give no output. DTC is set in engine control system. On vehicles equipped with Electronic Climate Control (ECC), fan speed does not reduce with increased road speed. On vehicles equipped with trip computer, faults occur in displays for average speed, average consumption, instantaneous consumption and trip computer trip recorder. Cruise control will shut down and a DTC will set.
  3. To correct this problem, turn ignition on. Read ABS system DTCs. If ABS-311 or ABS-312 are present, repair ABS DTCs first. See ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES. If ABS-311 or ABS-312 are not present, go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, perform status check. Test drive vehicle. Go into scrolling values and read vehicle speed. If vehicle speed is within permitted range, problem is intermittent. Retest system. If vehicle speed is not within permitted range, go to next step.
  5. Allow engine to idle. Go into scrolling values and read engine RPM. If engine idle is more than 1500 RPM, adjust engine idle. If engine idle is 1500 RPM or less, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Connect breakout box to ABS control module. Disconnect ABS control module from vehicle. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between breakout box terminals No. 6 and 8. If voltage is less than 6 volts, repair open Blue wire between instrument cluster connector terminal A3 and ABS control module terminal No. 6. If voltage is more than 6 volts, repair short to voltage in Blue wire between instrument cluster connector terminal A11 and ABS control module terminal No. 6. If voltage is 6 volts, check for resistance or corrosion in ABS control module connector terminals and repair as necessary. Retest system.
