DTC CI-132: Engine Speed Signal Absent

  1. This DTC will set if engine speed signal is absent for at least 10 seconds when generator sends charge signal (D+). Tachometer will not function.
  2. To correct this problem, turn ignition on. Read fuel and ignition system DTCs. If engine speed sensor signal DTC is stored, repair that DTC. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no ECT DTC is stored, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool, perform status check. Go into scrolling values and read RPM. If RPM is within permitted range, problem is intermittent. Retest system. If RPM is not within permitted range, go to next step.
  4. Check transmission speed sensor. Start engine. Read engine RPM. If RPM is within permitted range, problem is intermittent. Retest system. If RPM is not within permitted range, go to next step.
  5. Check warning lights. Turn ignition on. If warning lights illuminate, go to next step. If warning lights do not illuminate, repair open Red/White wire between instrument cluster connector terminal and generator D+ terminal. Retest system.
  6. Check engine speed signal voltage. Turn ignition off. Connect breakout box to ECM. Disconnect ECM from vehicle. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between breakout box terminals B21 and B28. If voltage is less than 6 volts, repair open White/Black wire between instrument cluster connector terminal A11 and Engine Control Module (ECM) terminal B21. If voltage is more than 6 volts, repair short to voltage in White/Black wire between instrument cluster connector terminal A11 and ECM terminal B21. If voltage is 6 volts, check for resistance or corrosion in ECM connector terminals. Repair as necessary and retest system.
