DTC 142: Brake Light Switch Signal

  1. If fault is intermittent, check brake light switch and ABS control module connectors for poor terminal contact. Repair as necessary. If fault is permanent, check brake light switch. Adjust or replace as necessary. If switch is okay, check wiring for a short to voltage between ABS control unit terminal No. 12 and brake light switch connector terminal No. 2. On A/T vehicles, also check for short circuit in wiring between brake light switch connector terminal No. 2 and A/T control module terminal B26. Repair as necessary. On all vehicles, if all wiring and components are okay, go to next step.
  2. Check fuse No. 11/12 in engine compartment fuse box. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, check wiring for a short to ground between ABS control module terminal No. 12 (Yellow wire) and fuse No. 11/12 (Red wire). On A/T vehicles, also check for short circuit in wiring between brake light switch connector terminal No. 2 and A/T control module terminal B26. Repair as necessary. On all vehicles, if all wiring and components are okay, replace fuse.
  3. Check voltage to fuse No. 11/12. Repair as necessary. If voltage was present, check voltage to brake light switch. Repair as necessary.
