Inspection & Replacement

  1. Ensure valve stem diameter is within specification and check valve stem clearance. Clearance should be within specification. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article.
  2. If clearance exceeds specification, valve guide can be replaced with an oversized valve guide. Valve guides can be identified by number of grooves on the guide. See OVERSIZED VALVE GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
    OVERSIZED VALVE GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS

Number Of Grooves Size Reamer Part No.
    0 Standard Non-Required
    1 Oversize 1 5161
    2 Oversize 2 5162
    3 Oversize 3 5163
  3. To remove valve guide, heat cylinder head to 212°F (44°C). Using Drift (5218), press valve guide from cylinder head toward combustion chamber side. Ensure valve guide does not seize during removal. If so, valve guide bore must be reamed to oversize.
  4. To install, with cylinder head at room temperature. Use Intake Guide Drift (5027) and Exhaust Guide Drift (5028) for guide installation. Install valve guide into cylinder head until drift contacts cylinder head to obtain proper installed height. Ensure replacement valve guide is same size as that removed.
CAUTION: Force required to install valve guide should be at least 2000 lbs. (907 kg). If less than specification, remove valve guide and ream to nearest oversized valve guide using proper reamer. See OVERSIZED VALVE GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  5. Once valve guide is installed, use Reamer (5224) to clean valve guide.
